What size bore is too big?

When does a 12ga. Bore become too big and become a problem ? Are there advantages to larger bores over smaller ?

 

Ask Kolar, "why don't they make their .750 any more" The Late gun builder Dennis DeVault felt that .740 was optimum.

 

Best barrel I have is on one of my 870s, .735 with a 18 thousands choke.

 

I did ... kolar said (tom) said his personal hunting gun is .770 and hunts all kinds of weather. Said no problem until .800….... I've checked (bore mic) several so called .740 that are .743+/-...and .750 that are .746+/-…....also weighed kolar .740 and .750 bores that were 2+ oz. Difference.....so very little difference between the two.....kinda like barrel porting that is not popular like it used to be.....

 

Standard is right around .729". Once you get past about .740–.745" you’re starting to push it. At that point the wad can struggle to seal properly with some loads, patterns get more variable (especially with lighter payloads or steel shot), and slugs become a crapshoot because they don’t obturate well. Go much bigger than that and you’re basically running a 10-gauge bore with 12-gauge shells, more problems than benefits.
