You can have the barrel modified with a type 4 lug. The type 4 has two bolts going into the rear of the forearm so that will not crack over time. Someone like eubanks gunsmithing or Giacomo can do this type of upgrade to the barrel. But requires rebluing.
If you do that, you need the new lug, the gunsmithing to put it on, reblue the barrels, plus the cost of the new iron and forend wood. It'd be a $2500+ adventure to accomplish that, so it pretty much would never make sense to do unless you have an exceptionally high grade receiver you're trying to modernize.
If you're handy, getting a DIY semi inlet from Wenig is probably the easiest option, most type 3 wood is cracked or in poor shape by now.
