I have some friends that say the older Perazzi guns were much more reliable and others say the opposite. I am looking at a few TM1s and older type 3 MX guns. Are the older models more reliable?

Type 3 MX guns have an inferior forarm design that is easily remedied with a good glass bed job.
They are also somewhat prone to having loose side ribs.
Aside from that, there's nothing wrong with an older Perazzi other than some parts availability for things like locking blocks, firing pins, etc. There are enough reputable Perazzi Gurus out there I am fairly certain if you had the 1st Perazzi shotgun made, they could rebuild it.

The only other issue I see with old guns is the half assed adjustable combs of the era, the addition of choke tubes/porting (which we see with newer vintage guns), the POI on the old guns was FLAT and the fact that some of these guns are going on 60 years old. Some are more abused than others.

I have a 45+ year old Type 3 MX-8 OU. I bought it a few years ago and Lucio shakes his head every time he sees me. It has been a semi-continuous struggle to keep it running, with small nitpicky parts failing. Latest is the retaining pin for the safety/trigger release, just to illustrate the point. IF I had a choice knowing what I think I know now, if the money was similar, I'd invest in a newer MX. Sometimes with the old guns, you get in cheaper but ultimately end up investing time and money to bringing it back to fully functional. Locking blocks, ejectors and springs, firing pins, etc all wear out and are not always obvious candidates to be replaced until you go shoot and it doesn't go bang. Just my opinion.
