Playing yardage group option? 20 vs 27 is a suckers bet. Back Fence Gamble .

I can remember when we had the option to play the yardage group. Top scores were by yardage. If the Back Fence Shootout was such a good idea why isn't Ohio offering that option? It is the same thing right?

Added money could be on yardage. The 20 yard shooter putting money down against the 27 yard shoot is a suckers bet.

They can get 600 shooters to play the option? That was just the 27 yardage group. Wasn't that option one of the reasons we registered targets? What am I missing?

 

This is an entirely different concept. It’s also not an ATA registered event.

It is exactly the same. I am guessing you were never at a tournament that had a yardage event / option. There was added money on the yardage group just like this. You paid to play just like this. You were squadded with shooters of same yardage. Just like this.

And you say that despite it being the same, "it is entirely different".

There ARE NO YARDAGE GROUPS in the Back Fence shootout. Everyone shoots from 27 yards. Some aren’t even ATA registered competitors. Comprende?

The 20 yard shooters didn't shoot. They could have.
Had the OSTA had a yardage group shoot anyone could have fairly participated. That was the way it used to be.

Yardage groups options are gone. That was a big reason to register targets. The OSTA is as slow as you.

From what I have seen there were 552 shooters. But there must have been one more person with a gun.

I would like to know just how many ata 20 yard shooters signed up. I would be willing to bet a few dollars that there were a lot more 24-26 yardage and game shooters than 20 yard ata shooters.

Please understand this.
One yardage group and some extras shot in the event. That number 550 is just one yardage group. When trapshooting had better leaders we had several events like this in one day. There used to be four yardage groups with just as much added money in each group.

Why didn't you know that? I suspect you haven't shot in big shoots if at all. (moderators?)

That would have put close to 2,000 shooters on the line. yep....thats the way is was.

The long yardage shooters liked yardage groups since the short yardage shooters won most events. Now the short yardage shooters are conned into shooting with the big dogs. I suspect they will slowly learn. Down a little this shoot.

 

I was replying to the post that said 20 yard shooters are “suckers” if they entered the event.

Wrong! The Back Fence event is a non registered event and all participants shoot from the 27yd line regardless of your ATA yardage. No one was forced to enter. If you choose to enter you shoot from the 27yd line with whatever options are included or you don't enter. There are an untold number of options that could be included in any program, but with 2 many options many will have very few entries which means some options will have a very small pay off or there will be a refund.

I am sure you are not too old to remember when the Directors and shoot managers did their jobs. You can't be too old to remember yardage belt buckles or yardage purses.

Saying everyone should have to shoot from the 27 is akin to saying we shouldn't register targets. The shoot proved trapshooters will shoot for money. It also showed they will put up the funds to make money. I believe that is the way it was in Vandalia at the Grand and the OSTA Championship. If I were a 27 yard shooter I would want everyone to shoot from the 27 and 27 yard shooters used to despise the yardage groups. They had to shoot for their own money.

Imagine what trapshooting would be like (again) if Directors and shoot management could apply themselves the way Joe did. The vendors will donate if the shooters are there. Joe showed the ATA they will come. He showed they will pay to earn money. The shootout was a yardage shoot.

Joe is a great leader. He showed the OSTA how to do it. Unfortunately they are to busy with their civil war.

Well, I can agree that people will definitely go and shoot where the money is whatever option that may be.
The odds of winning good money at the Back Fence Shoot-out are definitely in the 27 yard shooter favor.

And a News flash for you! It took me 1400 targets and my second target year, to get to the 27.

Now, the 2 yards in my second target year and my first year at the Grand in Vandalia did help me get there quicker. Moved from the 24.5 to the 26.5 in the Prelim caps, but it was still only 1400 total for the first two years. How many targets did it take you?

I never thought I had any limitations. If I thought like that, my avatar wouldn't have that 25 Straight pin on it. If someone thinks they are limited, they need to find a different sport.

Im not 100% sure but, I think the slot machine odds are the worst in the house.

For the record, I think the back fence is a great idea. I said as much on this very site after the first one.
It takes all kinds of shooters to make it what is. And my hat is off to all involved who make it possible.

I just might do that. I would have to practice a little before I went.
I haven’t had that much time to shoot a lot since the prostate cancer and the open heart surgery with a new valve and a 5 way bypass

I don't why we are even having this conversation. Didn't Gipson say money doesn't draw more shooters? By saying that Gipson didn't have to help recruit vendors and donors. And like wise the OSTA doesn't have to find donors for a yardage group shoot.

 

I don't quite understand how someone can look at this shoot and have anything negative to say about it? I don't shoot a ton of registered targets and i'm not a 27yd shooter. But this event motivated me to get my minimum targets in and go shoot the OH State shoot. I normally shoot Calcutta's and i'm for anything with a chance to win $. If people don't like the format of this shoot, get off your butt and put together the shoot you want to see! Thats the problem today. Everyone wants to sit on the sidelines and bitch and moan that something is unfair or they don't have a chance to win. But will they put in the amount of effort it takes to put on an event like this?? Nope! I love the idea of yardage class's its similar to what Williams Co does in December. I would much rather spend $200 and shoot from the 27yd line against some of the best in the country and shoot my shot, than go shoot 200 registered single targets for $100. The great thing about this country is we all don't have to like the same thing. And we don't have to sh&t on someone else's idea just because we don't like it.

Why get your minimum targets in? The State Shoot no longer has a yardage group. And some have said you have just as good a chance at the 27?
You accidentally made my point.

Wouldn't it be nice if your yardage group at the OSTA was for money? If one yardage group is good, isn't two? Or 4?

Does it matter? The OP's post was not knocking the shoot. It was asking for more yardage groups and moneys.
I would like to see the same pots on all the yardage groups. I appreciate the effort by Joe. The leaders of the OSTA haven't given us much to shoot for since the Dysinger era, and the few presidents that followed.

Gipson said money doesn't affect attendance.

The title the OP used didn’t say anything about wanting to bring back yardage money. He put that in his post but it pretty much said that if someone was a close yardage shooter they were “suckers” if they paid the entry.

It looked like most of the shooter paid with THEIR OWN MONEY so they could do whatever they wanted with it. I say most because from some of FG’s pictures it looks like a few younger shooters on the line.
BTW, how old was the winner?

Yeah, go look it up. And while you’re at it look at all the other events he has won lately. He’s no fluke
