Here is my list of hard targets to break. Listed by hardness. Mechlin Targets Lowery Targets Champion Targets Remington Blue Rocks White Flyers Bio White Flyers Pitch Gary Bryant Dr.longshot
A Lowry target in 5 degree whether might as well be made from Aluminum. Those suckers are hard, and it's virtually impossible to smoke one of them.
I've shot thousands of Lawry's and FWIW never noticed any difference in breakability. I do acknowledge that many others feel differently.
Gary, Somewhere in the top 5, you have to put the Champion target made in Minnesota. I believe they are made out of concrete. Birddog
Dr. Longshot, In the early 1970's when I started ATA shooting, we had the Minnesota State Shoot in St. Cloud at the Del Tone Gun Club. They threw Champion Targets. Every year the State Shoot had those Dam Champion targets, with Hot and Windy weather. Trying to hit something made out of concrete inter woven with steel on a hot windy day was not an easy task. But, I kept going back... birddog
Champion Remington lowery white flyer bio old white flyer white target -do not know what they are made of but have few cases at club.... steel and Kevlar composite in my mind.
Wasn't Elwood Brown involved in a target manufacturing company in the late 70's early 80's? PA State shoot? Flyersarebest
Black Diamond, I believe was the name of targets I shot at one time in the late 70's. You could drive them side ways and they still would not break. A club member later claimed they picked them up and threw the same targets all summer, I almost believed him!
Perhaps we should always throw Champions. We wouldn't need to add 3 yards or go 3 hole! Think about it.
They tried to throw Champions once at the Grand. Pulled them out about the second day & replaced with White flyers. Walked out into the fall area one evening after the shooting and found one unbroken with seven holes in it and a couple of scrapes. Don't tell me those Champions weren't hard. We throw Lowreys in NW Penna all year around. Maybe don't smoke 'em but they break!
Sorry, 90T, can't remember the year but when you get to 75 you won't remember dates either. But I do remember the pallets being loaded in the evening shipping them back to Champion. Shot the Grand about twenty years, it was one of them.
In My opinion, You can also add Trueflight targets to that list. I will not shoot anything other than 7 1/2's for those. On a sunny day, it is amazing, how much dust is seen coming off those targets, when shot at. Seems to be a pretty hearty target, especially in the cold of winter.
I've shot thousands of Lawry's and they break just fine, A target found with several holes is not hard....It's soft....
Federal Champion and Woody Brown's top the list. The only time I ever saw Frank Little leave a shoot early was in MD when shooting Federals!
