Yesterday dealt with some crazy sustained wind. Not wind gusts. Happened to be head wind. But have had to deal with sustained tail winds in the past.We have all been there. Just shoot and hope for the best. Try to adjust in someway possible. I generally shoot faster and try to acquirer the targets faster. Certainly could not ride any. I've never tried to step up shell speed on 16 yd. targets. Really never gave it any thought even though I had some handicap shells with me. Crossed my mind today to give it a try in those conditions next time. Do you step up your shell speeds? 1145 to 1250 fps. 1145 to 1200 fps. May have possibly picked up a few more targets.
No need for head winds; however wicked crossing winds might make the need for a little more speed, especially if you're an old fart like most trap shooters-kind of hard to rotate those old arthritic hips--can't shoot high speed Winchester shells, their shells feel way more"snappy" compared to Remingtons & Federals
Myself, I keep shooting the same shells (except 6 shot non reg) and try getting my sensory perception kicked into high gear on the target paths...especially doubles.
I’m gonna mess with it next time under those conditions. I have the shells to do it with me. “G” you are right with head wind speeds. We had losses that were still carrying when if the next shooter had a dead bird, clay was on the ground. Wind gusts are one thing but, strong sustained made it real interesting. Can’t say I remember it like that for a long time.
Shoot the same 1145 loads no matter what the weather does. Gotta' keep the equipment as consistent as possible. If the wind is excessive, I just shoot a little quicker.
Extra shot of expresso and shoot faster --Farther away from the trap house the more affect on the bird and shot
In a nasty wind you may have to push the gun a bit more against it or to keep it from moving the gun. The shot charge could GAF in any wind that you can stand up in tho it is easy for the wind to play hell w/ the targets.
Other than registered shoots, it is kinda fun to shoot with Gusty Wind. Although I don't want to do all the time, just once or twice a year. Makes it like a new game.
#1 son and I shot a 50 target event yesterday in a high inconsistent wind with poor visibility. Over 150 shooters with plenty of low scores including mine. #1 son insisted he needed heavy 7.5's while I stayed with my pipsqueak light 8's. I was in the low 40's while he shot in the 30's. And the moral to the story is?
We really don't know each other or anything but I would bet the shoot was one I was going to attend but I opted to work on something yesterday to freed up my whole upcoming weekend. Will be up there on Sunday to shoot. I suspect the winds will be blowing high because the rain should moving out. The winds there always get interesting. But when its calm what a great place to shoot. Mother Nature, what can you do. Good shooting, have fun.
