Shot a 98/100 Handicap in a gully washer downpour of Rain !

1. The first 25 started to get testy with a cool incoming wind at our backs with a few rain drops. Halfway thru it started to get dark with more wind and rain. It kept getting so dark that we all changed our shooting glasses to a clear lens. The next 25 was the biggest test when half way thru it continued to get darker with a heavy downpour of rain so bad that we had to wipe off our glasses every 5 shots and I was thinking that I needed windshield wipers on my glasses. We forced forward to finish shooting targets that were looking like black silhouettes in a fog. We almost finished the last five when the score keeper yelled out "that's it" his pen quit working on the score sheet that looked like a sponge. So we all walked to the club house sopping wet. My shell bag had an inch of water in it and I was so wet that even my billfold was soaked thru with wet money. Finally it cleared enough to go out again and hit the deck wet. We finished the last five on the 2nd 50 and got ready for the next 50. Then it started up again with a lite rain thru the 3rd 25 and on the last 25 it got us with a steady rain. So we made it thru the entire 100 to finally finish the hardest trap shoot in my 60 years of shooting as a squad leader. Surprisingly enough we all shot good scores in bad conditions. When I got home it took me 2 hours to clean my Caesar Guerini Forum and use a hair dryer to air dry my equipment.
   
   This was the first Registered Shoot on Sunday 6/24/18 at the Wyandotte County Fairgrounds In the Kansas City area, managed by Don Budd and Dennis Harris.
   
   I am looking forward to their next registered shoot that will be a piece of cake compared to this one.

Thanks Gary, It's a good thing I dried it out with a Hair Dryer set on high. Otherwise the blueing would have turned to browm.

I will check it out today ... it might have shrunk to a 410 ?

 

Was it raining hard enough to see your pattern punching a hole?? --never seen it but was told about it --- is it true??

 

Yes, I could see a faint shot string to the target. I was able to shoot a hole in one for 85 targets straight after the first 15.

 

Had the same happen on the last 50 handicap birds here in Washington State shoot a few years ago. Holes in the rain and some perfect smoke rings too. Kept thinking this is one of the stupidest things I have ever done. The young man shooting to my left and myself ran that last 50 birds though. There was a young lady shooting in a T-shirt to my right. Ruined my soft focus!

I guess a detailed disassembling of your CG is in order.
And I wouldn't put the wood back on for couple days.

Do you think that's the one occasion to use WD40 for displacing water & moisture on metal first, then wipe clean and blow dry? Or stay with other oil?

 

LPS is far superior compared to WD-40 and I have used it for over 30 years with great results.

 

Storeman, Thanks for the play by play. Great story and great shooting. Reminds me of my first punch from the 22 to the 23 many, many years ago in Utah at the Ogden Gun Club. I was 16 years old. I will never forget it.

I agree with Storeman about LPS, far superior to WD-40, the only thing I found to be even better is Clenzoil ... Clenzoil can be used on the wood, leather, car interior, metal, is a cleaner and protector ... I have used it for over 25 years and it has never failed me, I buy it by the case ... Google them and they will send you a free sample, you will be amazed ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

 

WPT, You are so right on the Clenzoil I have been using their products for decades ... Highly recommended !

Another amazing product is Big 45 Frontier metal cleaner. It is a dry scrubber that will remove rust and oxidation in seconds and not harm the blueing. A real bargain for 6.00 bucks. Will last for years.

Shot a similar situation at the Hawaii state shoot about 30+ years ago. Went to line as the only out of state shooters (4).We were squad 7. Squad 2 (top local shooters) were due up. That is when the third biggest lie in the world was incorporated. "the gun is at the airport" At that time if you were on the 10 oclock flight, your luggage would be on the 11 oclock flight. Never understood how 7 followed 2. We went to the line and the sky opened up. They knew something that we didn't know. Figured we were dead meat. Had to cut hole in bottom of pouch so water could run out. We thought we were had. Asked for several show targets and they appeared to go out about 25-30 yards, stop dead and fall down. We all switched to open chokes, switched to 3 dram 7 1/2's, and let the targets fly til they stopped and shot them. Squad shot 2 100's,(one of my most treasured 100's) a 99, and a 98. Was a good shoot regardless of what appeared to be politics.
