My question is can you use a Winchester primer in a hull after using a cheddite in same hull, I tried measuring with calipers but that's not real accurate, but I plan on taking one of each to work and getting some measurements off of optical comparator, just curious what you guys came up with.
At the base a Cheddite should measure .243 and a Winchester .242. I have a chart but can't see how to post a picture on this site.
I've found them to be different depending on the hull. Shadow graph will tell you the primer difference but not as a pressed assembly with a hull. Simple check is to make some and depth mic the primer face to the hull bottom, that's what counts in the end. You don't have to make complete hulls, just press some primers and check them.
I loaded 5,000 of 'em in Remington STS & Nitro hulls in my PW 800+ there were some issues with primer seat adjustments and some would be a little "proud", which is resolved upon closing the gun. Kolar Max TA. After firing the Cheddites I reloaded 100 of them with Winchester 209's to see if they were loose or would fall out. None of them did and they shot just fine. There may be issues with other hulls (perhaps, steel) but there is no issue with STS or Nitro hulls. I've since moved on to Noble primers and like those just fine, actually better than the Cheddites because they are easier to load with no "proud" loads showing up.
Ken, I believe there have been some physical changes by some manufacturers since that chart was published. It's been reported that Noble Sport has made physical changes in their product, and perhaps Cheddite. According to a Winchester insider, Noble is now being used in Winchester ammo produced in Europe and is now the exact dimension as Win 209.
I have found that once you load a Cheddite, Winchester Primers fall out, That is why I always used RIO Primers and always loaded them, Never had a RIO Failure, the large flash Hole always burned slow burning powder like Longshot, And Winchester always fell out of them. The RIO's are the Largest Primers just the Like the ALCAN's were in the 1960's & 1970's at that time ALCAN's was the PRIMER FOR SLOW BURNING POWDER like Herco, 4756, AL-7&8. Get an ALCAN Primer and load it in a HULL any Hull, Load it in a GUN, POINT IT STRAIGHT UP W/BUTT on the ground and put a QUARTER or HALF DOLLAR On the top of the Barrell, Fire it and see how far UP IN THE AIR it would go, Higher than ANY other Primer Bar None. On the QUARTER IT WOULD GO OUT OF SIGHT Back to Winchester Primers, They would fall out, LOST POWDER too, You had to stay/ w LARGER PRIMERS Forever once they were loaded. Beggers can't be choosers --Todays market I have to use what I can find - don't always like it -- What are we going to do if we still want to shoot?
