Here is picture of what the old Jaqua’s trap club looks like today. The traps in this picture were part of bank 3. Lots of fond memories. Played many gin games in the shade of that old tree. The fence is only several feet in front of the trap houses.

 

Talk about a shot curtain.

Don, I drove by today on the way from work to shoot at UCOA. It is sad, but long gone. I missed out on the good old days there, but did get to shoot some at Jaquas. I have a piece of paper Dad kept score on dated 5-26-2014. I shot from the 23.5 at Jaquas. I tied with Willie A and Rick S with 96 on the caps. Cam did a coin flip and I ended on top. I got a yard to the 24.5. I think it was the last time I shot there.

The new gun shop is very nice.

The old, local trap club, where I pulled many a Sunday as a teenager is now a park used mostly by minorities. I drive by it every day. One of the old skeet towers is still standing, a sad reminder of the past.

 

When Cam called and said that there wouldn't be any more shoots there I believe a part of me died. From Fisher Brothers Shooting Park, through Fisher Jaqua, and then for the last many years Jaqua's. What a great place to shoot trap. Over the years I shot 161000 and Dirk shot 114000 ATA registered targets there besides practice and shootoff targets, which included a 725 target shootoff during the 1989 Central Zone shoot With Larry Bumsted and I being the last 2 standing. Larry won and for many years this was the ATA's longest shootoff.

What was the old address? Really took that place for granted.

That’s the place Flyers! There were 4 more traps on the west end that comprised bank 1. It was a wonderful layout and very even from end to end. Never cared what bank I shot on because I liked them all. I was fortunate enough to see the plans for the proposed expanded layout for holding the Ohio State Shoot. As much as I loved this club we all know that Ohio State Shoot couldn’t have found a better home than it has now. Times change, but I will always consider Jaqua’s as my “home club”.

You made me curious about how many targets I had registered at Jaqua’s. From the ATA’s shooter information center I was able to get my numbers from 2001-2014. Sadly the shooter information center didn’t have a breakdown by club for the years 1993-2000. I registered 45,400 targets at Jaqua’s from 2001-2014 averaging a bit over 3200 per year. Using a yearly average of roughly 3000 for the other 8 years I shot at Jaqua’s would put me near 70,000 targets registered there from 1993-2014. A great many of those targets I shot while squadded with you and Dirk.

 

Don when I started shooting in 1974 Jaqua's was called Fisher Brothers. I'd hate to guess how many targets I shot there over the years, but you probably have more than me. I'd say it was my home registered club too. I broke my first 100 straight in doubles there in 1977. We used to shoot a 200 bird doubles event every Saturday and Sunday that they had a shoot. That's how I really learned to shoot doubles. Now I drive by once a year just to look at what's still standing.

 

thanks for the address. I was wondering what warehouse was in the background since I own a small trucking company. That warehouse is awful, and now i miss Jaquas more.

 

It's a distribution center for the Campbell Soup Company. I believe that DHL operates it.

 

you are correct. Their load times are awful min 3 hrs, had one driver there for 7 hrs once. And you will see the NFI guys running to and from Napoleon all day at high speeds to service that warehouse. McLane's right next to it is just as bad.

 

I was introduced to trap shooting in the mid/late 60's. At that time, Winchester was leasing clubs to get folks involved in trap and skeet shooting. They lease this club for a period of time. Anybody remember when this was. They also lease the Mercer County Sportsmen club for a few years. Shot there in the early 70's.

 

Does the new facility have an interior safe/gun room?
