Don't know the date as the photo I would guess is over 100 years old & has been glued to other paper so the inscription on the trophy is not clear. I did post the names just in case someone can identify the shooters & what State they were from, PA or NY or both? The shooters have the same pin on their sweater. 2 r shooting double barrels & 2 shooting Winchesters 1897, I think? I didn't know about this type of competition before I viewed this photo.

I'm guessing its the PA 4-man team from a gun club in McKean Co., but I have not identified the date, place or competition. I believe the shooter on the right is Harry E. Brown, noted sportsman. I'm only speculating on general information I've found.

Great picture of historical meaning 25nout !

Did anyone notice the gun that the fellow on the right is holding appears to have a Heikes Hand Protector on it ?

Those were patented on Feb 12, 1889 so if that is a Heikes, the picture would be dated sometime after that.

Heikes did have them for different gauges of guns.

What do you think HB ?

I agree. I'd put the date of the contest between 1895-1900. Just a guess though. I still have not found any of the named shooters. Well, except Harry E. Brown who was a well-known sportsman who showed champion dogs in several breeds. It is his name that provided me the assumption that the 4-men team was from McKean Co., PA

I forgot in all my excitement of finding the Heikes that 25nout mentioned the Winchester 1897 ( Model 97s) in the picture.

I enlarged it to see if the gun the left man is holding could have been an 1893 Browning design or the improved Winchester 1897, and it appears to be the 1897 without a doubt. Actually it looks like both men are holding 1897s, so this would put the date at that year or forward.

HB, I am sure you will come up with the answer to this puzzle in due time.

This has been an interesting research so far.
