Was @ a local club yesterday, its a one field club Well a family of 5 shows up with all non trapshooters--3 adults and 2 sub teen children I became the designated RSO--it took them 35 minutes to shoot one post before changing stations-- It would have been close to 2 hrs before they shot 25 targets each-they were sharing guns and doing a lot of picture taking I split , will talk to the club owner, what should be a reasonable amount of time for one group to"HOG" a field?
As the RSO, I would have given all of them a copy of the range safety rules and after they had read them, I would have asked if anyone had any questions. I would expect to get some questions, especially from the two sub teens. Then I would have all 5 potential trap shooters demonstrate their ability to safely operate the gun they are planning to use, including what to do with the gun if a misfire occurs or a broken target appears. Then I would tell them that sharing guns on the firing line is not safe and therefore not allowed. I would have the 3 adult shooters on squad one, with the 2 sub teens standing next to me, the RSO, watching the adults. Then I would have the 2 sub teens on squad 2 with the 3 adults standing silently next to me, the RSO. Pictures can be taken with verified unloaded guns after the shooting is done. As the designated RSO, I would not have left these 5 shooters alone after they finished their first post. After all 5 shooters had shot at their 25 targets, I would thank them for coming out to shoot and encouraged them to come out and shoot again. And when I, the RSO, left the gun club, l would be wearing a happy smile knowing that I helped these shooters be safe while they shot all their targets. Just my opinion.
