Looking for recommendations....adding a raised rib on a Perazzi MX14 would improve sight picture? And if so what height and what brand. Many thanks in advance.
I have had Dave Berlet in New Knoxville ohio make me many ribs out of derlin. He installs them with double sided tape. Great job, fast turn around and reasonable price. His phone number is cell 419-953-8862 home419-752-2557. he can make them any height and set the poi at any place for you.
Thx for the info. I am getting the gun next week and I will pattern it first (and give Mr. Berlet a call). BTW the barrel is a 34" unsingle.
If you don't have the gun, have not patterned it, what makes you think you need a higher rib or any changes at all ..? WPT ... (YAC) ...
Good question! From the reading I have done I am seeing many shooter opt for higher ribs to help with the sight picture (by having a more upright natural eye position), faster target acquisition, and will shoot less fatigued over many rounds (say 100-200 or more). I am just wondering if I just shouldn't start off a try it with that set up right from the beginning.
None of my business but seems like you are putting the cart before the horse if you alter it before you even try it ... If it does not feel right then make what ever changes need to be made, at least them you will know what changes you need ... Check the pitch and make sure there is not to much plus or minus, then go from there with the POI (point of impact) compared to the POA (point of aim ) for your desired results ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
I've done this several times to different guns. To get a feel for the right right height rib, just get some 3/8'' plywood and strip to various heights...1/4, 3/8, higher. Tape on barrel. Mount gun the exact same way. Raise head to more upright position, untill your looking flat down rib. Once you like what you see, cut some hard foam to raise comb to keep cheek in place. Hell, i've even shot the gun in this fashion to make sure i center target. Then spend your money on the real deal.
Speaking from experience, the higher the comb the more ''cast off'' you may need Your head will pull more inward as your head is raised due to the spinal column.
My two cents, justed ribs to a MX 8 combo. Its important to mock up ribs with different pitch, pattern them and shoot some targets. I took a piece of wood the approximate width of the rib I wanted. It was about 12" wide and cut to the barrel length less the ramp. The angle (pitch) I needed was then cut/sanded on the board. On a table saw I cut the ribs height, I made a few with different pitch and painted them black. To simulate beads I put in common pins with plastic heads. To keep them in place I put some superglue around the heads. To hold the rib on the barrel I used painters tape, the tape that was on the top of the rib I colored black with a marker. Fortunatly for me, a friend with a machine shop machined aluminum ribs to my specs. They were put on with 3M auto trim tape. Both barrels are ported, the top single throws allot of powder on the barrel/rib. After a few months of cleaning of the powder residue using solvent, the tape started to give up. On the top single I put the rib on with black Permatex RTV, it seem so far not to be effected by the solvent.
Thanks again for the great feedback. I have a few things to work on, but first we'll see how the gun patterns!
