Hap: Depending on the problem with your hard drive, there are methods and means to withdraw almost all of your files.

Even using your wife's laptop, you can remove the defunct hard drive and attach it with the appropriate cabling (SATA, eSATA, IDE, etc.), and run that through the USB port on a second computer such as your wife's; providing the drive runs.

I used to do this as part of my business for years when I was building systems and servers, and when I was doing post-retirement volunteering for law enforcement and the State's Attorneys Office here. I worked in the PD computer lab at the Forensics Evidence Lab for a couple of years doing all sorts of free work as their only IT guy. My doctorate is in comp sci.

There are places on the Internet that can for a fee resurrect your files. I don't use them as they are horrifically expensive and often give you back almost nothing. However, with today's available hardware, one can access many of the files, etc. If possible one could clone you bad drive and hopefully resurrect the O/S and files.

I just redid my main system here in the shop, replacing all the platter hard dries with the new SanDisk X400 SSD 1 TB static hard drives. It not only sped up the system, but because I don't trust rotating drives and the SSD's have no moving parts. I also use Carbonite for automatic daily backups and ISO imaging. I also use Acronis to clone the main hard drive onto a secondary hard drive; overkill but I just can't be down. When/if SSD were to ever fail, I simply swap cables. I am also going to do RAID striping at my son's request. He has a masters in IT and really knows more that I do.

Lastly, and depending upon how confidential your files are, as a friendly gesture, I would be happy to attempt to remove your files, burn them to DVD's and them send them to you - at no charge. I have quite a shop here not only dedicated to Perazzi and P/W, but computer building/repairs. I don't do any computer support except for a few close friends in business here. We normally barter/swap as I don't charge for doing this any longer.

Thank you Whiz!! Much appreciated my friend!

My old computers hard drive was Windows7. Microsoft kept sending me information to update to Windows10. I guess I put them off too long and my computer completely quit working causing me to lose everything I'd saved through the years.

I'd box it up and send right now but it's in a box of about 75 or so in my single garage waiting for me to get all my loading tools put back together! I haven't touched it since I moved here to Nevada.

I want to thank you for your helpful offer though, I'll begin a search for it but the ISP tech I had in Tucson said he couldn't retrieve much from it at all??

If you can simply send me the hard drive, that'd be a helluva lot cheaper.

My favorite OS is still Win764. I do not care for the Win10 and all the crap it wants to load on the screen.

Microsoft has way too much control over things. I even prefer to use Office 2003, although I have Office 2007, 2010, and 2013 on several computers. Too much. No one can learn all the nuances of one before another version comes out. I used to teach MS Office 2003 years ago and it does just fine with me.

When refusing to add Windows 10 to my 7 operating system, Microsoft still put files in place on the computer, forcing you to accept 10 or crash the computer! That's what happened to mine! I'm still going through boxes of my loading room boxes to attempt to find the old hard drive. What a mess I have!

    Thanks Whiz!!

I hesitated as long as I dared and finally put Win1064 on one of the new systems I built using the Intel Skylake 6700K processor. I liked the way it had many of the needed drivers already within Win 10. Actually, my son an IT guy in Portland talked me into it, as we built "twin" systems. I am now running Win1064 on all the systems (4) in my shop.

Lving to Win 7 interface (dekstop), I downloaded "Classic Menu" and "bitmenu". My WIn10 now looks and acts exactly like Win7. The bitmenu also gives me the look of MS Office 2003. I use MX Office 2003, 2010, and 2013 on these computers. This one I am typing one has MS2003 and MS2013. I like MS2013's Word's easy function to print to PDF whereas I had to use a 3rd party program to do that. I send out lots of invoices in PDF.

So, I guess I have to say the you should not be fearful of Win10, if you mimick what I've done to make it function as WIn 7.
