Robert Hight may just win another NHRA Funny car championship today. Drag racing was a big part of my life from the late 60's to early 70's.
I used to make the US Nationals in Indy about every year in the 70s. Big fan of Dyno Don Nicholson and his Pro Stock Maverick, and Bob Glidden in his Super Stock 69-70 Cobra Jet Mustang convertible. Ford vs Chevy, Grumpy Jenkins and his crappy Chevies. LOL Then the Mopar guys in their hemi Cudas. I was a Ford guy and a lot of my friends were Chevy guys. At the local tracks it seemed like Chevy had the edge on Ford most of the time in Super Stock, till we got to Indy where Bob Glidden had that Mustang tuned in. Then Glidden went to Pro Stock and dominated for a long time. I stopped following em in the 80s when I got a mortgage. LOL It's probably been 25 years since I was at a live race. When the local tracks all went to 1/8 mile that is also when I started to lose interest. Remember bracket racing? A local guy had a 59 Chevy with a straight 6 and a 2 speed automatic, and he dominated bracket racing - I bet his car didn't hit 65mph in the quarter but he won every dam race. Ran the same time every effing time. LOL I wanted to enter my Snapper Comet riding mower just to beat that clown one time but they won't let me. LMAO
I was a Member of the NHRA for 40 years, drag raced anything or everything I owned damn near from Out Law Super Stock to the family grocery getter , got way to chicken shit for the average racer that did not have some sort of backing and the prices they charge to get in the races today are ridiculous, last time wife and I went it cost over $200.000 for the day but that is with something they call food and a beer ... When I lived in Chicago, we used to street race, that's where the money was even after greasing the cops ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
