Choke tubes

Ok, so what brand reasonable priced choke tubes do you like and why?

None at all ... I am not a fan of choke tubes, never have been and probably never will be ... I am not one to change, alter, or modify chokes but I bought a gun that had Wilkenson (sp) choke and I was totally impressed with the way it worked ... (.740 / .031) would break targets from 50 yards behind the trap house with new Nitro' 27's / 7 1/2 's ... JMHO .... WPT ... (YAC) ...

 

Any choke will work for trap as long as it's full.

 

Have used & like Briley for years.

If you need a constriction that is not available with your factory tubes, then Briley is as good as any.
A choke tube is a choke tube. All the advertising about how "superior" one brand/construction/material is over all the rest is nothing more than hyperbole.
Remember: they are trying to SELL their product to you.

 

I disagree. Materials & tolerances are very important if you want a quality choke. Ideally the choke lead in should be a few thousands larger than the bore. NOT the 20-30 thousandths larger on many that I have measured with a bore gauge. Briley will build you a choke for your gun, and it will be the best. It is critical that the bore be measured by someone who knows how to calibrate & use a bore gauge.

 

I didn't think anyone was talking about a custom-built choke. 99% of choke tubes sold are of the mass-produced type. That's what most of us buy.

I don't believe it's proven to be as critical as you believe it is. Not in the production of good patterns.

As far as material goes, patterns don't care if the choke it's just gone through is made of carbon steel, stainless steel, clad aluminum, or titanium.
Materials are chosen for their advertising impact, not for their perceived performance impact. That's what I believe. (and I do have a metallurgical background)

 

I am not a Choke tube fan for many reasons I have expressed several times over in the past ... I find all of the reasons, excuses, data, unique and compelling in many ways but still not to the point I am even tempted to buy another gun with Choke Tubes, having owned one that I sold at a loss because it had choke tubes ... I have watched as people support the use of choke tubes, custom choke tubes, made in a variety of metals, always expect these people to state the difference they got by using different shells, cannot recall that happening or being discussed to any extent which I have found to be to the point of drastic at times even with my fixed chokes ... I would bet there are some graphs, charts to show and support those differences at one time or another ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

 

Chris Vendel made some of the best patterning choke tubes I and a lot of others ever used.

I haven't been in contact with Chris in years, and have no idea if he is still making his chokes or not.

So do Briley, Carlsons, Seminole, Brain, Comp-N-Choke, Kicks, Muller, Pure Gold, Rhino, Roberts, Teague, Trulock, Wizard, Wilkenson, etc.
Not to mention Beretta, Browning, Remington and several other manufacturers (some of whom use the above choke makers to supply their tubes)
Bottom line; no one maker of choke tubes has a monopoly on excellent products, we know that. You pays your money and you takes your choice.
