What will it take to be able to win a car at the GRAND AMERICAN HANDICAP like it used to be done
A cheap car w/Automatic Transmission, Air Conditioning, AM/FM Radio, If memory serves me right it was a $25 option. It would only take 600 entries or 120 squads to make it pay for the Car.
How many of you here would support that option.
Maybe the OSTA could do this at CC for Ohio State Shoot.

Unless you are able to get an auto company to underwrite the option for advertising purposes, it's going to be a damn cheap car. Pay the transit, and all expenses and $15,000 isn't going to buy much. Maybe a Fiat or something in that range.
Then your going to hear that "BUY AMERICAN" complaint. And to fill that order, it would be a $50 option at the least. The last two car shoot I remember near our area, and that was a while back, both were in Canada, they were unable to get enough entries so paid off a percentage to the winner.

"How many of you here would support that option." .... no one with any sense.

You forget the effort to put enough CASH into the "Grand" to buy a very nice car, or two. NOT just "A cheap car ".

Until you fix the "Grand" .... the prize will not attract shooters. The scores and requirements have to within reach to the average shooter before a "Cheap Car" will excite anyone.

Here is the opportunity you have been waiting for all this time, all you have to do is buy a car and donate it for the prize. Kinda like what was done in the days of old where someone did that exact same thing.

With the drawing of number to shoot off for a car would be within reach of every shooter, just like the Gun draws shooters at State Shoots, now where ever they hold the Grand American In Nervada, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York or Arizonz

A 'Lucky Number' shoot has zero to do with ability ... just luck. People are not going to travel for random luck.

The Ford Focus, The Chevrolet Cruze, are just 2 American Cars. The Draw number was just an Idea. We could have each yardage winners in a shoot off for the car!!! OK name some other ways. I like the latter yardage winners.

Remember the Honda and Toyota are built in the USA too.

Plus the advertising and pictures they would get in the Various Program Pamphlets, good for the Mfgrs. The CC could talk to
Steve Stedman he is a Chevrolet Dealer in Eastern Ohio about a car for Ohio State Shoot.

I think most people would like the money. A lot easier to bring home than a car that they may not like.

Are you going to buy one and donate it for this years Grand? You talk like you want those type of prizes back. All you have to do is get the ball rolling. One car for each Grand week, eh.

They are assembled in the USA. Still considered foreign.

It does sound good, but most people would be much better off taking cash instead of a large prize like that. Especially a car that they may not really want or need. Google it and see why many people end up refusing large non-cash prizes because they can't afford to pay the taxes upfront.

I like to believe that people will enjoy whatever your sponsors are willing to give. Its all about how you approach them. Presenting "Good" ideas to them is always a plus. A car or truck would definitely blow my mind away...

If you remember the CC gave a car away a couple times at the Ohio State shoot. Now they do a golf cart and trailer. Maybe someone that was in on that could chime in and see why they made the change.

If I remember correctly, the OSTA raffles the golf cart and trailer at the state shoot. Someone who buys a chance has a very good week!

I think the days of wine and roses are pretty much gone, the same thing about shooting for cars ... The majority of shooters never felt like they had a chance unless it was a drawing as opposed to shooting for it and most would not get involved any more ... The money evaporated years ago and the game has been modified to make everyone a winner or make them feel like they are any way ... It would take some major changes to get back to the days of old when winning really mean't something , afraid those days are gone for ever ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

In his glory days Arnold Reiger would break down his gun hitch hike or get to the club any way he could, because he was very sure he would drive home the prize of a car in the champion handicap event. That is why we now have a 27 yard line. The cars were not donated by individuals. They were bought by the clubs with the purse money, or a dealer donated them. Roger C.

Steve Stedman was the man responsible for giving away The Chevrolet PU, The dealership is located in East Palestine, Ohio, near the Pennsylvania Border. He gave my son a great deal on a vehicle several years ago, and is a great man to buy a car from.

Chevrolet Motor Division I believe gets in on the deal with the participating Gun Club along w/the dealer.

Out West the Gun Clubs and Casino's were responsible for Cars to be won along with advertising of the Car Manfacturer.

I personally think this can be done yet today, I can remember the Ford Pinto's that were given/won by shooters, and some Caddilacs out West.

    Gary,

I would think the ATA and a sponsor or two, could come up with $30k for a car or other significant prize, or a cash option at the Grand every year. But, the only way they will get a significant number of shooters is to do the number qualifier. If it was just the top score wins, it won't change the attendance one bit.

I take it you're going to donate a car for an event at the CC? Don't be one of those people who are all talk and no action!

I had to go back and read the Dr.'s first sentence.

"What will it take to be able to win a car at the GRAND AMERICAN HANDICAP like it used to be done"

Then I read the above post,

"I take it you're going to donate a car for an event at the CC?"

When did the Cardinal Center get the GAH ? Somebody better call Merlo.

Flyers, and then he went on to mention other places that gave away vehicles. Or do I dare correct a moderator?

You can post anything you want. Every time you or one of your buds post something it raises the total post count. You didn't correct anything because I didn't post anything that needed corrected.

Why are you guys so AFRAID of moderators on this site? If I wanted you gone you would be gone.

I think that Oprah gave away about 50 cars on her show. Can we get Oprah to shoot some trap and maybe donate a few cars. The Skeet shooting Assn used to give away a Buick every year. The ATA never did this. They spent the money on the Presidents gun.We need better sponsers with deeper pockets.

I joined the ATA 40 plus years ago, back then it was a self and organization that more or less policed itself via the members, without getting the ATA involved ... Honesty and Integrity abound , if you broke or bent a rule you usually got called on it by some of the other shooters or shoot management ... It was not for some chicken chit infraction but something that possibly could of mattered when all was said and done ... This site is very much the same for all practical purposes and well it should be ... I'm not sure Duffer is close to right with his statement of everyone but a few being Mods so again he stands corrected, but he is getting better ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

The Problem with Oprah is she keeps blabbing about how old people should die to make the world a better place, her show has not and will never be seen on any Television in my house ... I hope she dies, that makes it even ... If not for White people she would be cleaning toilets and changing the sheets on a hotels or motels beds and dusting, got no use for that PIG ... WPT ...
