Isn't that what the sport needs?

    VERY few.

One local shoot had a pretty big one through the early 2000s that was done on a high/low two man team (highest average paired with the lowest average, 2nd highest with 2nd lowest, ect). The big $ (drinkers) all aged out and stopped tossing in $, and it died. Most of the money it in came from the liquid courage of non-participants, with the high/low system very few shooters wanted to risk $ as the team with the best shooter rarely made it because they had the worst shooter on their team, and those at the bottom (which was middle/middle) usually didn't make it either as or or both would shoot mediocre. The safest bet was about 3-5 teams down from the top.

Someone tried to run a single shooter handicapped calcutta at my state shoot a few years ago, it went on for a year or two then I think it died too. Not enough $$$ to get people interested when there's no outside source of funds.

Maybe not skeet, but I was recently told of a live pigeon shoot where the winner walked away with low to medium six figures Calcutta first place.

It can be done, but I don’t think will ever be the venue.

its been my observation being i run a range and create games to attract shooters, most skeet shooters dont come to shoots with chump change to blow. they tend to be tight wads, yet demand everything.
its weird. many have 5 figure guns, yet wont put their money where their pride is.

cigar smokin, cadillac drivin, rv outfittin, wad of money buldging from pant pocket, beer drinkin, ref tipping, gun flinging shooters, are a dieing breed.

in all the years i ran my 3 day shoots, i only had one person tip the one man help, who spent 2 weeks prepping the match. then he cleaned up and picked up broken targets.

im glad those days are over.

The competitive spirit died out with the everyone gets a trophy t-ball generation thanks to their boomer and gen x parents.

A lot of people people treat NSSA/NSCA/ATA as a weekend camping trip occasionally interrupted by some shooting. They're worried WAY more about the quality of the food than they are if they win anything.
