Absentee Shoot Off Score

    Hello Everyone,
Last night I caught a lot of grief for leaving Middletown on Sunday and not staying for the shoot off 2 1/2 hours later. I asked if there ever was an absentee shoot off for persons having to leave. I explained that if a person thought that they might have a high enough score could ask shoot management to allow them to go down to a practice trap and be scored just like you would do if you had to shoot a make up. This would all be on your dime and the only persons that would know the score would be the shoot management. Now I understand that some people sit down there and shoot the bull, play cards and chat with old friends, but some of us have addition responsibilities with their families. Here is an example. My Sunday started with 16 First Communion children that we escorted ( 4th degree K Of C Sir Knights) at 10:30. I left St. Paul's in Englewood at the speed of sound to make it in time for the handicap event (9). I had pre-squaded on Saturday after event 7. Squad 17. By the time I got to the club the first squads were taking the line. I shot and then sat for a little while knowing that I would have to start back to Englewood to help my son finish moving or babysitting duties. You guys get the drift. After the grilling last night , I asked what would happen if I would have sat there for 2 1/2 hours and the last squad someone posted a 98. So has there ever been such a shoot off rule like this?

If you would of sat there for 2 1/2 hours and someone posted a 98, you wouldn't of had to sit there for 2 1/2 hours, no more problem ... Who gave you grief for leaving and why would they care ..? Different strokes for different folks, take your chances ... You could of sat there for 2 1/2 hours and then lost the shoot off with so much on your mind any way ... You did good ... WPT ... Your right, thanks WPT .... had a great time and got to shoot with some nice folks from Ky. That's good enough for me:).

Interesting to read this. Our 4th Degrees did this too. I just thought our Grand Knight was a goof ball. Seems like it must be something that is regularily done.

To answer your question, NO, I've never seen someone be allowed to shoot off at a different time than the others they are tied with. You could get into all kinds of different situations, wind, rain, lighting etc. Sometime we just have to prioritize our activities. As WPT stated, you did what was right for you. Nice shooting too.

    Brian,
The ATA has a rule that covers your question regarding "banking" shoot-off targets in advance of the actual shoot-off. I have copied it below. As you will see, it is possible to bank shoot-off targets but only if all tying shooters are notified and agree to it. I have participated in telephonic shoot-offs where we banked targets and it went rather smoothly. Given the time constraints that we all face these days, I agree with you that it would be nice if there was an easier way to go about this at single site shoots too.

From ATA Rulebook pg. 15, Section H SHOOTOFFS

    6. The practice of banking targets in advance of commencement of a shoot-off is not permitted unless all tying shooters are notified and are in unanimous agreement. Exception: banking of targets is permissible for telephonic shoots held in multiple locations.

targetbreaker if it goirs bang I probley shot it.

that sound like it might work if the shoot was over, but if not and someone comes in with a tie in last squad and did not agree, does that person win by default.?

Targetbreaker has a very valid point. If a shooter banks targets during the daylight hours and the shoot off is held under the lights, I probably wouldn't be thrilled if I was the one shooting at night. It's just a tough situation any way you look at it.

Don has a good point, was under the impression banking targets was only done at satellite shoots , that's not to say it could not or should not be used at other shoots ... Might be a good suggestion for the suggestion box, if you can find one ... Talk to your Delegate (if you can find one) and get him or her to make the suggestion and get the ball rolling ... WPT ... "So has there ever been such a shoot off rule like this?" .... Here are a couple of things that would stop an "absentee shoot-off score" .

How many would you shoot in advance ???? You break a 24 in advance, and in the first round of the shoot-off there is your 24, and a 24 and a 23 by the other shooters. Now what ???? Some shoot-offs can go many extra rounds, and the number of possible combinations of your score against other possible scores would be many.

And .... how many shooters, and to what end ?????? At 3pm 97 is the high score and shooter-X wants to leave and shoots advance shoot-off targets. At 4pm 98 is high score and shooter-Y wants to leave and shoots additional targets. And at 5pm a 99 .... and so on ....

A shoot-off is a pain in the butt when everyone is there .... trying to figure in an "absentee shoot off score" would be over the top.

User 1, the example you gave the final score of event would be the shooter with a 99. All other scores doesn't matter at that point. The rest of the field of shooters would be out the funds to the facility for scoring the absentee round or rounds. The nice thing about it, is the rest of the field wouldn't have to set and wait for the event to be over. I think last Sunday they were taking shooters up to 4 PM.

From a shooter's point of view .... "I pay for the targets" ....

From the host Club's point of view .... "I need a trained score-keeper at the practice traps to make sure the targets are in proper order. I need someone to review who shot additional targets, and at what final score. I need someone to sift through the "absentee round or rounds" and see if they may qualify for place or category" .... and so on.

The number of shooters that would usually have to bank targets would be few normally, have seen it done on many occasions and it never seemed to be a major problem ... Today with the computer programs and some slight modification I would not anticipate a great deal of confusion ... I'm not a big fan of carry overs which are much the same in a weird sort of way yet that is included in a lot of programs today especially at the bigger shoots ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Yes you are correct. But I could have won the whole handicap event if I would have stuck around til 7pm, or maybe not. We had this discussion last Tuesday at New Port. My comment back to those people that were making fun of the fact that I left before the shoot off was this, we also used to use the restroom in an outhouse! Times change and so should our sport.

    Brian,
If you are shooting that well you will get your chance to get them again sometime in the very near future ... Shoot offs are a lot of fun especially if you end up being the winner, remember to be humble, shake their hand, and gloat all the way home ... Its good sportsmanship that way ... WPT ... Once again your right. And to show that I am a good sport. We will table this discussion for now, but we need to look into a way of fixing this problem in the future. I saw in one of the post about the Mid American Shoot that attendance was down because of the cost of fuel. If a guy is carrying a $5000 - $10,000 shotgun and several hundred dollars in ammunition, do you really think that the cost of $2-$3 gas is the reason. No, some people have a life outside of trapshooting, but enjoy a little time to spend with their squad mates as well as with their families. Enough said.

Life is full of choices. Last year I skipped a carryover for preliminary AA Singles at the Southern Grand to attend a spring training game. The boy accumulated 4 baseballs-priceless!
