After that doesn't work for very long go to a "pain specialist" and have a Radio Ablactation procedure done. That's where they burn the nerve ends. It lasts for 1-2 years. I've had it done on my lower back, and I'm having it done on my neck on the 18th. Other than that the best thing I've used is cheap Aspercream from Walmart. I hope cortisone works for you. It didn't work for me for over a few weeks.

I have been going for treatment for almost 6 years, the searing of the nerves lasted only a short time for me as did the Opioid shots into the spine at the base ... I didn't get any relief from the Cortisone, heet products, or wraps , considering the new Stem cell procedure if it turns out I am a good candidate ... Time will tell, in the mean time I can only hope ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

I had almost the same symptoms including shooting pains down the outside of my left leg across my butt and all the way down to my left foot. I had an MRI which I went over with my neurosurgeon. I had a small cyst at the L5-S1 intersection on the left side. Doc recommended steroid shot and said it should at least put off surgery.
I had noticed that about the only thing that relieved the pain/discomfort was sitting in my recliner chair and lifting up my left leg and even resting it across my right leg. It occurred to me that the leg position was quite similar to sitting in a yoga lotus position (the basic sitting position in yoga with the legs crossed "Indian style").
So, I got out of my recliner and put down a folded blanket and began sitting in that yoga position while watching TV, trying to sit up very straight with as little pressure on my spine as possible, just like I was balancing on it. I started doing light stretches by leaning to the sides and forward, especially forward to the right since I knew the cyst was on the left side of the spine.
Well, I will be damned if it didn't cure me. Flat out. Has been about a year now. I still spend some time sitting on my butt with my legs in that crossed position with the feet above the other leg and I stretch a little, slowly and not trying to get very aggressive.
Never did get the injection. And, am now walking 9 holes with no problems.
Knocking on wood it continues to work for me.
    Good luck SJB.

If you have a pot gut losing that will be a way better path than long term injections of any kind.

Going through this crap right now. Chiropractor says it's an issue with L2 and L3. Standing any length of time is very painful and shooting is even worse. At least I can still sit and lay in bed. This sucks.

I would suggest you visit an MD. No offense to Chiropractors but they are not doctors and their science is based on a belief that all disease originates and emanates from the spine and the feet. They have evolved but they do not study medicine.
You probably need an MRI and some good docs to evaluate. You may need a neurosurgeon.
Good luck. The pain you are describing really sucks. And it sure screws with your life.

After years of problems with the back originating from injuries and exploring every option I could find I finally got an MRI and the doc with the knife fixed it.

MD was visited and decided it was bursitis in hip. Shot, cortisone, therapy and drugs did absolutely nothing. X-rays again last Friday and awaiting results. PA and Chiro said time for an MRI. I'm pushing in that direction.

Sounds like the MD was over his head. You might want to check in with a neurologist or a neurosurgeon. (The neurosurgeon will probably need an MRI to evaluate you.)
Good luck Oleo. An MRI will certainly give you a lot of information.
Hope they can get you back up.

I had a compression fracture in my neck and down my spine, the neck was operated on right away the compression fractures down my spine were not obvious at the time but the severity of a broken neck masked a lot of pains that showed up later in life … I was in physical therapy for 4 1/2 years (3 days a week, after a year of 5 days per week), had a specialist from Sweden (consultant ) check it out and said it was to early to tell what the end result might be or when it might or might not flare up ... I have sciatic problems as well as numbness down both legs to my toes, sometimes the pain and or numbness is so intense I need to use a walker or crutches because I cannot put pressure on my legs, this can last from a day to 3 or more days (worse case was 8 days ) … They have done MRI's, CT scans, multiple injections, some procedure where they shock the nerves, nothing has been successful as of yet … I'm kind of guessing the only real cure would be rather drastic, not to mention permanent … This getting old Shit isn't for kids, it would kill them … WPT … (YAC) …

Been subject to back problems for over 20 years, if you care this is what worked for me:
    1) hooked up with an orthopedic surgeon , who treated the Jacksonville Jaguars--didn't like what he wanted to do
    2) later on hooked with an orthopedic surgeon from Duke--ditto from the above
    3)go epidural injections as needed
    4) 14 yrs later hooked up with neurosurgeon, did the repair 3/4" incision , out patient
    5) still get epidural shots may one ever 6 months
could not walk around a super market-prior to surgery

Stay away from any orthopedic surgeon who is not a neurosurgeon ,also

Have any of you guys taken Osto Bi-Flex? I started taking it a couple of weeks ago and it seems to be making a difference in all my joint pain including my lower back and neck. Big horse pills, but I have less pain in my old joints everywhere.

That stuff is nothing more than Glucosamine Chondroitin MSM which is available for a number of sources at FAR lower cost. I get mine at Costco for pennies. The herbs and blood pressure stuff is at your own risk. Might ask your doc about that.

Osteo Bi-Flex® Triple Strength contains Hyaluronic Acid as well as additional Boswellia, Vitamin C, and Manganese. However, Osteo Bi-Flex® Triple Strength with Vitamin D also offers 2,000 IU of Vitamin D. Osteo Bi-Flex® One Per Day with 5-Loxin Advanced contains Glucosamine and Vitamin D.

I used to have the same pain, reduce my sugar intake, spent less time sitting on the computer. Months later i could barely feel the pain.

We don't have a COSCO here. Do you have any suggested name brands? I consume very little sugar.

For years Puritan has been my primary source for vitamins and supplements. They have an excellent rep for quality and their prices are right at as good as it gets on those products. JMO of course

i used natural sweetener like honey. and when i use regular sugar, i make sure its at a minimal. no ice cream and other high sugar stuffs like sodas. i corrected my back pain without a chiropractor, surgery or exercise and i think you should try it too. i lay down on my back a lot and relax.
