One of the firing pins broke in my Krieghoff K32 San Remo that has Bill Main “enhancements” as can be seen in the pictures. I’m going to send it to Ottsville since there is no Krieghoff gunsmith close to me. The gun is serial number 590#. The trigger has been changed to a K80. I’m planning on shipping the receiver only. I’ve never had the gun, or receiver separately, professionally appraised. I’m requesting some comments on what I should insure the receiver for. A couple of folks I shoot with have suggested that I ship the receiver via USPS. Thanks in advance.
If you do not have insurance on your guns, you should get it as it will cover damage, or stolen. I shipped a receiver to a stock maker wrapped very well in bubble wrap and other packing material Priority Mail and used a post office box (free), and when he was done returned it to me the same way and everything went fine. I had tracking, and did not insure it with post office as I had insurance to cover this specific gun on my policy.
I would suggest you contact Krieghoff on what you need to send them. I did on a KX5 that needed a new sear and they wanted me to send the entire gun to them as they said they needed to test fire when work was done. With insurance and shipping cost both ways would have run over $200.00 plus the part and labor.. I just ordered a sear from Phillips and cost me $70.00. If you are anywhere a big shoot ( satellite grand ) there could be a gunsmith there that could repair it.
Shipping by USPS is expensive but if you insure it for any amount you deem necessary and they lose it you'll likely get paid for your loss. FEDEX shipping is cheapest, they've never lost any yet, but have damaged a few. Insure it for any amount you feel necessary but if they lose or damage it they'll try very hard not to honor your claim. My suggestion is to send it FEDEX in a quality steel hard case with a good shipping box and insure it for a minimum amount. 99+% of the time it'll get there with no issues. Skimping on packaging will sometimes get you in trouble.
Ship and insurer for replacement costs. Most that do not get delivered are not lost but some one steals them. High insured packages get special handling. Roger C.
If you have your guns scheduled on your homeowners policy via a PAF (Personal Articles Floater) or by any one of a half dozen firearm specialty insurers, chances are good that your guns are covered for the transit portion of trip. They may not be covered once they are received by party you are shipping gun to. Ask your existing agent what the transit limit/sublimit is under your policy.
If it's only a firing pin, can you buy one and replace it yourself? I didn't do any German shotguns, but I replaced both Perazzi firing pins in about 15 minutes.
I used a K32 firing pin in my Rem.32 years ago. Got it from Hal Dupont. Not very hard to install. Assume K32 is about the same. Firing pin was almost identical. Just needed a little polishing to fit in the block. With all that gorgeous custom work, I would try to use someone as close as I could. Regards.....Gerald
DO NOT use USPS, they are very unreliable and have the worst tracking info of all carriers. Use FedEx or UPS overnight and it will be there the next day on time. No need to put ins on it with the overnight delivery and pay Ottsville the extra to have it overnighted back to you.
To bring closure this this thread I waited until the Krieghoff folks were at the Ohio State Trap Shoot. I called and made an appointment after explaining the problem to them. It’s about a 3 1/2 hour drive to the Cardinal for me. Cost of gas was less, I’m sure, than the price of the shipping/insurance and I was in control of the gun the whole time making me feel much more comfortable. I actually had to wait almost a year to get the gun repaired but the wait was worth it to have the piece of mind of having the gun in my possession. Krieghoff charged me less than a hundred dollars for the repair(s) including parts and labor.
