Gipson said: We have been pretty lucky with the results of the grand the last few years. Gipson even had it put in writing at the EC meeting in December. You cant make that up. Who would believe it? Proud of 1745?
Gipson (the Talking Head ) might just be right about being lucky with 1745 entry's for the Grand American Handicap, it could of been a lot worse, and probably will be as more and more people opt to shoot closer to civilization and have already seen the HOF once ... If more people play the money that is not a number that makes it a bigger, better shoot ... The slippery slope the ATA is sitting on is not getting any better as the attendance has been on the decline since the relocation .... WPT ... (YAC) ...
Gipson, Just does not know when to shut up about the direction of the ATA. Him saying what he does only brings attention to the dismal direction of the organization. It has been in a downward spiral for the last 10+ years. It also seems to be gaining speed. Roger C.
Speaking of going in the right direction the Nation Sporting Clays Association's US open has more than 1400 shooters already registered. Won't be long before they get more shooters than the Grand!
Sporting Clays seems to be feeding the need for many shooters even in this area ... The course at Ben Avery is usually quite challenging but they draw big crowds, and they obviously know how to host a shoot or they wound not be as crowded as they are ... I shot 2 rounds with a trap gun and was told I did well (68/72) , I felt like a fish out of water , but had fun any way ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
The "minutes of the EC Dec meeting" read as to be expected from someone who played "all-in" ..... "Sparta" is "rosey" for someone who has businesses there, an over-paid job, and a wife on the "payroll" at every chance ..... It would be silly to expect them to read, "I get paid to do little to nothing, the grand is a failure in the current location, everyone still gets travel money for shoots to participate, and I should resign along with may others" ..... Has a Captain ever been paid more to sink the ship, without getting his feet wet ?????
Comicon (comic books) in Phx has a better turn out than the grand does in Sparta ... If they moved comicon to Sparta they could do in one day what it takes them 3 days to do now ... Over 100,000 people and lines stretching around the block on opening day ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
In February, the Facebook universe of self-identified comic fans grew to a new high of over 24 million fans in the United States according to comicsbeat.com.......... A rather generous estimate of the number of trap shooters in the US is a shade over 1.7 million. With all due respect, the comparison above (although I liked it and thought of the guys from the Big Bang Theory) is rather meaningless with the great disparity between the number of participants in both venues.
Where did you get that number ????? You offered, "according to comicsbeat.com" for "the Facebook universe of self-identified comic fans", and nothing for "a rather generous estimate of the number of trap shooters in the US" ..... So, where does this "rather generous estimate" for "trap shooters in the US" come from ?????
Well, lets take a look. Would it be the general consensus that trap shooting has declined in numbers over the past ten years? According to many here the numbers of trap shooters has been declining for more then ten years. So here is a chart showing statistics gathered by the National Sporting Goods Association in 1996. So in 1996 there were 3.7 million shooters participating in trap or skeet. Now of course some shooters will shoot both trap and skeet so lets be generous and say 40% shoot skeet and 60% shoot trap. So lets just round things off and say that in 1996 there were two million trap shooters. Now remember, these are not ATA numbers, these are from the National Sporting Goods Association. So how many of those two million trap shooters from 1996 are still shooting? How many new shooters have been added to the fold? Everyone here claims shooting is down. Seems to me that 1.7 million looks to be right in the ballpark. But who wants to quibble over a million here or a million there. Add as many million as you like to the number of shooters shooting trap today, it matters not. The fact remains, the comic book guys outnumber us by such a vast amount that any comparison of comicon to a trap shoot has no meaning.
Thanks "trappermike" ..... it is always interesting to know people of such great wisdom can post something like, "Seems to me that 1.7 million looks to be right in the ballpark" ..... Would you know the "ballpark number" of "RedNeck Skeet Shooters" in "1996" ????? http://www.topendsports.com/sport/unusual/redneck-skeet.htm
trapper mike, Is there a difference between target shooters and trap shooters? I did not see the word trap or skeet in any of the statistics. Reader comprehension should still be mandatory in all of our schools. It is very possible that a much smaller percentage of the total are trap shooters. We know how much trap and skeet have dwindled. We also know the wild growth rate of sporting clays. The rest of the story is not rocket science, the growth of one has led to the demise of the others coupled with the older shooters that have either died or do not shoot for other reasons. The lack of good leadership at the head of trap shooting is also a factor for our demise. The fantastic direction of our sport can only be corrected by the people in charge, our delegates do not seem to be up to the challenge of the job. They are the only group that can directly change any decision made by the EC. Roger C.
Be sure to keep your fine sense of humor "trappermike", you seem to get a little sensitive at times without it ..... This "fact", "The fact remains, the comic book guys outnumber us by such a vast amount", seems to only have you to support this "fact" ..... In my NOT so humble opinion, ONLY a "dumb-ass" makes up their OWN "fact" to post, "any comparison of comicon to a trap shoot has no meaning" .....
Well, as usual, when you get your ass handed to you in a discussion you resort to your normal name calling. Comparing comicon to any trap shooting event is ridiculous, everyone who reads this understands this. Looks like someone got a little sensitive, LMAO.
Simmer-down "trappermike", your going to get upset and show everyone who the real "trappermike" is ..... You said the person who posts here, with such pure intent, is a "different" person than the not so nice one(s), in the "other" places in cyber-land. I bet I can find this, "Well, as usual, when you get your ass handed to you in a discussion you resort to your normal name calling.", used in "other" places in cyber-land ..... What say you "trappermike" ????? Keep "handing me my ass" while your all upset, it gets very "telling" .....
Trappermike 1996 was two lifetimes ago, the Grand American back then had about 4000 shooters, (1745 last year) was in Vandalia Ohio a very pro gun state and the ATA EC hadn't completely destroyed their credibility. In 1996 you had not suffered 8 years of Obama. The gun and shell companies hadn't flipped to all black guns and 22's weren't rationed at wal mart. I worked (was paid) by Beretta in 1996 so I know a little about the shooting industry then. In 2017 rifles and especially handguns dominate the industries focus. I would like to see a much more resent report than 1996 before I jump to any conclusions about Target Shooting. If indeed your numbers guess of 1.7 million is right the 60% loss at Sparta should be of even more concern. The comic book thing I don't get. (Don't care) The people in China outnumber us Americans by a billion and half or so but even Mississippi has more Trap Shooters than they do. What does that mean? Not a thing I just wanted to stick that in to show that the only thing we can compare the Grand to is the Grand. Not 1996 comic books, not cyber-land, not China. BUT Sparta to Vandalia is a fair comparison. Sparta to the Cardinal is a fair comparison. Trap to Skeet and to Sporting is a fair comparison. 100,000 ATA members in 1980 to 34,000 in 2016 is the one comparison the ATA can't hide from. To quote that ED that makes about 183,000 grand a year " a FANTASTIC direction." by the way the 183,000 K a year is more than 1000 bucks an entree in last years grand handicap. Brad
I was being sarcastic with the numbers at a comic book convention as opposed to a gathering at the biggest little shoot held at the WSRC in Aug ... I think I saw a Bobble Head of Gipson in the back window of a Mexican Ghetto cruiser even had the little red eyes that went on when he stepped on the brakes, sure looked like him ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
Maybe in direct compensation ..... but who knows in indirect compensation to keep the "location" of his "business" open to the public 365 days a year ..... That place in BFE could sit and rot most of the year, if someone did not use it for a free storefront .....
Exactly! Brad, that was my point. The comparison was meaningless. It only gives credence to all the folks who think the anti ATA rhetoric is due to the loss of the Grand to Sparta when the problem is rooted much deeper as pointed out in your post. What say I? Do all the searching you like User 1, I am not the guy on the other site. You are being paranoid. I could have said "dumb ass" but then that would have brought me to your level. Name calling never enhances ones position in any meaningful discussion.
Here is my point "trappermike" ..... Making up your own "ballpark number", then use the word "fact", is much like the "excel error" published in the "ATA" rag ..... You can have an "opinion" on something WITHOUT the need to generate random "information" ..... Many people here put great effort in keeping "Trapshooting" information accurate ..... so when someone follows the "ATA" and makes up a number to suit their need, it is "dumb-ass", or takes a "dumb-ass", in my not so humble opinion .....
I wouldn't say we "agree" on that "fact" ..... I think I make it very clear that I do not post in cyber-land to make faux friends ..... having said that, I do not "like", or "dislike", someone I have never met "face-to-face", because some try to be someone they are not in public view, and be much different out of public view. The "fact" I act the same "face to face" may be something we "agree on", if we ever meet "face to face" .....
