Minutes of the February OSTA meeting

OHIO STATE TRAPSHOOTING ASSOCIATION, INC.


FEBRUARY 27, 2016- CARDINAL CENTER – MARENGO



President Jeff Schlichter, called the meeting to order at 10:39 a.m. Secretary Snively called the roll and the following Officers and Directors were present:


Vice President Martin Miller, Treasurer Courtney Haning, SE Zone Director Tonya Bluhm, NE Zone Directors Doug Gormley and Dan Lukanec, NW Zone Director John Mueller, Director-at–Large Bobby Caplinger, A.T.A. Delegate Roger McNamer, 1st alternate A.T.A. Delegate Pat Neff, 2nd alternate A.T.A. Delegate Clyde Findley, Museum Director Betty Peterson, Foundation Chairman Dennis Filo and Past President Dave Schock. NW Zone Director Dick Barhorst and SW Zone Director Tim Hunsaker did not attend.


Everyone reviewed the minutes from the January meeting. Doug Gormley moved to accept the minutes as written. With a move to second, the motion passed unanimously.


Treasurer Courtney Haning presented his financial report showing a balance of $132,060.00. The insurance is paid for the new year. The account has little activity this time of year other than purchasing the knives for the gun club trophy package from W. R. Case & Sons Cutlery. Courtney stated that he feels the Association finances are in good shape. Marty Miller moved to accept the report and with a move to second, the motion passed unanimously.


Roger McNamer reported that the A.T.A. shooting center in Sparta is scheduled to reopen in March. The A.T.A. is not pleased that the SCTP Nationals have pulled out of Sparta. They have extended the Aim portion of the shoot by 2 days. They backed off of the E-Z-GO Golf Cart raffle and are promoting the Krieghoff gun instead. The A.T.A. is also offering a $250.00 twenty-year membership program that can rollover into a life membership at a reduced rate.


Noreen provided the Board with a mockup of the 2016 Zone Shoot program. The Board agreed to add notification that shooters must apply next year to be considered for the 2017 Cabela’s All-Ohio Team. Noreen will have the programs printed and mailed. Marty reviewed the zone trophies. At the April meeting, Noreen will provide each zone with their trophies, hats, ballots, team forms, and team letters.


Noreen has arranged for the All-Ohio Team clothing through the sponsor, Cabela’s. She has provided Cabela’s with the sizes and will make arrangements to pick up the garments. Pins have also been ordered and she will print up certificates for the Thursday evening presentation. Roger McNamer has been working on the All-Ohio Team application for next year. He will provide Noreen with the final draft. She will have that form included with the zone materials and will also have it available at all of the Cardinal Center shoots.









Two full-page color ads have been placed in 2 issues of Trap and Field magazine and 2 issues of Trapshooting USA. Noreen provided a copy of her first two ads. Noreen also has the State Shoot pins ordered- “Proudly made in the USA”.


Director-at-Large Bobby Caplinger reviewed the sponsors for the State Shoot. Most of last year’s sponsors will be returning this year. Bobby is still negotiating for a big ticket item and has several possibilities.


The Board recessed for lunch and was joined by Luke and Jake from Cardinal Shooting Center. Cardinal has added the September Redbird Classic. They are in the process of expanding the facility to accommodate the SCTP Nationals. The SCTP industry rented all of the cabins. Jack Fishburn plans to make things so accommodating, that they will never want to leave! There will be a fundraising banquet at the pool hall the evening before and tickets are for sale. The Collegiate Shoot is set for October. Jack made some improvements on the pond and made it three feet deeper. The gazebo was relocated into the pond with a walkway and a windmill is planned for where the gazebo once stood. Another building will be erected by the new pistol range to use for training and seminars. Sandy will not be supervising in the CEB this year due to illness. Luke’s wife, Rasa, will be filling that position. Cardinal is lighting three more trap fields. The bunker trap will be back in operation around the end of March/1st of April and will be run by Cardinal Center. It will be open the same hours as the practice traps, and during all registered shoots. Due to the many new projects, the 3rd vendor building is currently on hold.


At 1:10, the meeting resumed. Marty Miller reviewed the trophies for the State Shoot. Noreen asked that Jeff follow up with Linda Shields, the trophy room attendant, regarding her hours. Noreen asked Marty to make arrangements for the delivery of the additional youth trophies. Marty confirmed that he has ordered the Champion of Champion bags from Shamrock Leathers and he will also order the Sue Kaufman bag. Marty advised the Board that he stayed within the allotted budget.


R.J. Stuart has again requested that the Board consider adding AAA as the AA shooters are complaining. The OSTA Board has always been aware that adding AAA means that AA shooters loose All-American points as they go to the highest class. This is just one of many things that must be weighed when the AAA class is discussed.


Noreen provided the Board with the pages of the State Shoot program for their review. The target cost has been determined- $30.00/100. She has set a deadline of March 22nd for revisions. Everyone on the Board is responsible for reviewing the program.


In unfinished business, the idea of asking the Zone Shoot hosting gun clubs to help bear the expense (starting in 2017), was tabled until Tim Hunsaker is in attendance as it was his request to revisit this topic.


Noreen will check with Dave and Bev Mowry to see if they will run the corn hole tournament this year. Dave will find a backup in case they are not available.












Noreen has talked with Pike County Coon Hunters and informed them that President John Tolliver is the only person authorized to apply for registered shoots and handle gun club business with the Ohio State Trapshooting Association – not Arkoe Outdoors or Todd Beekman as he/they are not in good standing.


The policy for scoring an absent shooter on the Zone Team at the State Shoot will remain as is according to the January 2016 minutes.


Under new business, the Board will go with using our regular team of target setters since the new contract with Cardinal has not been settled and signed. Dan will contact Ron Berrier and his crew as soon as possible to arrange for their service.


Noreen and Dan have been working on finding a company to design a new web site for the Ohio State Trapshooting Foundation & Association. The old site has become outdated and has developed problems, especially on the shoot calendar which finally had to be removed. The new site will be very user friendly and shooters will be able to navigate through their phones, i pads, etc. Noreen and Dan researched companies and found one they agreed upon and arranged for a conference call to discuss ideas and pricing. Dan and Noreen are confident that this new company will provide the O.S.T.A. with a quality web site that is user friendly, easy to navigate, mobile and secure. John Mueller moved to budget for a new web site, not to exceed $6,000.00, with the Foundation to contribute 1/3 of the cost. With a move to second, the motion passed unanimously.


John Mueller moved that the Association meeting be adjourned. With a move to second, the motion passed.
