LED Lighting

Our club is considering replacing the lighting on our trap fields with LED's. Another club in the area replaced their lighting with LED's and the target visibility was so bad that they had to put up some of the old lights to make the target visibility acceptable. It was also tried at our club and the lights were taken down and the old units were reinstalled.

Does any have the specifications for LED lighting that was used and provided ample lighting for a trap field.

ledlights.com, we use the 500 watt pro v series. 6 lights per field. Much better than the old lights.

 

LEDs are seductive until you try them at night. Trap fields need a ton of bright, even light right up to the muzzles good LEDs give you that, but most off the shelf ones are too soft or have hot spots. The club that went back to old lights probably just didn’t find the right spec. Ask the other club for their exact model wattage, lumens, color temp, beam pattern and you’ll know what to spec. Until then, keep the old fixtures.

 

What actually works is high-output sports/stadium LEDs (roughly 400–600 W each) with narrow optics (around 15°) aimed specifically at the target flight path, 4000–5000K color temperature, and a proper photometric layout so you get good vertical light on the birds. Just swapping the old metal-halides one-for-one with generic LED floods almost always fails.
