Mine is either a .243 or a .223 . I like to try for shot placement rather than knockdown power. I rarely have a pig run further than 10ft when I make a headshot.
You're right, shot placement is the most important in any firearm situation. Shooting large calibers and hitting something in the foot doesn't work very well. Most any caliber works well when placed in the right spot. A .22 rim fire has put alot meat on the table.

For hogs? 6.8 or 458 socom would be the first two I'd consider. The 458 is definitely purpose driven, but amazing on hogs within 200 yards. The 6.8 is great on hogs but you can also stretch it out quite a ways.
Another vote for 6.8 spc in an AR with thermal . Bought a 450 Bushmaster upper but haven’t got the subsonic loads for suppressor worked out yet.
