The Admiral has got the new car bug in the brain again, unlike me; she rarely keeps a car long, I put at least several hundred thousand on mine as long as they run and are still safe. She currently has a 2018 MB SL, MB is coming out with a new model with a big ass touch screen. Well after seeing a review of a 2021 S 580, the car IMHO is not f--ing safe if u use a touch screen. Most people who buy these cars are in their 60-70's, the reviewer conducts his story in a hangar that houses a precision flying team--all the members of the team failed trying to use the touch screen How can you get a ticket for texting & driving. and not get a ticket for playing with a touch screen. This crap is distracted driving on steroids !!!
You're absolutely correct. I bought a BMW M850I and took it back after a week. Biggest PIA to use the touch screen. Better have it set before driving.
Jut bought a new Iphone 11 pro max and the touch is so bad. I have to touch the hell out of it, almost fighting with the phone...Chinese tech is crappy.
Fiddling around with a touch screen while driving probably isn't much more dangerous than fiddling with the radio was.
If your car has presets no problem changing channels, the control is on the steering wheel, this is where it gets hairy, there is no tactile feedback from a touch screen-you can touch the screen a thousand times and not know what controls your'r affecting with knobs you have feel & know what knob does what On a Porsche you have to swipe the screen to adjust a/c vents, on a BMW you have to touch the screen to open the glove box, on a Benz you have to touch the screen to change transmission modes, or seat amenities (heat, massage)
2018 ford explorer. Everything is through the computer touch screen. HATE IT These things must have been thought up by the new generation gamers. OH that's cool. NO IT'S NOT. Have had the car for a year & a half, and still don't know how a bunch or stuff works. Read the manual? You have got to be kidding. Can't find out anything from the book. Better off U tubing stuff. Prefer buttons switches & dials. You know where it is & how to turn stuff off & on.
in my day, buttons and knobs were different sizes and located in different places for a reason. it was to ensure the user knew what he was touching without looking. aircraft were the same way. today....its all too close or the same. there is no doubt im using the heater fan switch when I flip it on my 76 c10. and my lights are a big knob you pull out. music? volume on left, channel on right. AM only.
On the first sub Served on bow buoyancy was a triangle knob, safety tank was round & negative was square--no problem actuating these important valves in total darkness
I drive a 2020 Cadillac XT6 and while driving a message will pop up on my touch screen that says "TAKING YOUR EYES OFF THE ROAD IS A HAZZARD " Then why in the hell does GM have it pop up while driving???
Fords do it too. Why the hell give you a message about being dangerous to look at your screen while driving, when you have to take your eyes off the road to read their stupid message!!!!
Where is a Ralph Nader clone ,when we need him? There is an uptick in auto fatalities--Ya think these touch screens might be a factor ?
