Old friend, good chatting with you last week. It must have inspired me to think about going to my State Shoot. I haven’t shot much since 2012. My only shooting recently was 100 double targets in September 2019 and 100 doubles targets in September 2020. I have not practiced at any club in years. Since 2014 I’ve only shot 100 registered singles targets, 200 handicap targets. I finally decided (approx. 6:30 p.m.) to hang my Jordan Wall Chart on my shed wall. I hadn’t used it since last year when I only used it once just before the State Shoot. It had been 16 months since I touched my gun. I shot better than expected and was high man on the squad of friends with 89. Centered targets well but made mistakes from lack of practice. I put the shotgun together (first time touching it since last September) and made a few moves to the targets. My goodness the gun felt heavy and I became arm weary before making 11 moves across the chart. I thought: "Gee, if I only smart enough to use the chart more often, my arms would be stronger." I think I made 8 full rounds, resting each time, and could make no more. Weak arms and sore shoulders which I’ve had for some time. I decided to practice again in the morning and had finally made up my mind that I was going to the State Shoot. Not sure if I would shoot but would go. Well, I never had my morning practice. Yes, I was lazy and my heart still is not really into the shooting game anymore. I wish it would come back but since I don’t even understand why I have no desire, I’ll likely never figure it out. Shot a practice round breaking about 22 of 26 targets. Saw some out of state friends who want me to join their squad. Handed my card to one of them who signed up our squad. I got post 3, my worst position (used to be). I hit targets well, knew the cause of my misses, ending up with 46x50 on the first field. I was well pleased with myself. And, my old friend on post 4 went 50 straight. On the second field I found myself paying more attention and wanting to break those mud pies. I cleaned every post. Yep, 50 straight for a 96 and my friend dropped 4 for a 96. I think there were three 97’s for high score of the day, one being a resident Doubles Champ. State runner-up went to a shooter scoring 95. My friend won the Open Veteran trophy and I was fortunate to win Resident Sr. Vet. My point is, that once again, I have no doubt that Terry Jordan’s Wall Chart continues to help me with control. Control helps build confidence. Confidence helps break more targets. The Wall Chart works if you use it. The more you use it, the better the results. HB
HB you old coot, CONGRATULATIONS BROTHER !!!!! And yes, one cannot say enough good about Terry's Chart !!! Hard to digest that we are now Senior Vets. LOL Anyway, I hope you can find this to be the encouragement you needed to go to the club a little more often. With all my recent health issues as of late, Docs have asked me to not shoot more than 25 shells in a day with days off in between. NOW I wish I had taken more time to shoot more often before this hit. Once again thanks for your story, and again Congratulations !!! D & J
HB, Good shooting ... I have been using my neighbors wall chart 2/3 times a week, can attest to the sore muscles, shoulders, arms, and even legs from standing, so once I get past a couple of medical issues I plan on taking the Model 12 and shooting some practice ... I have pretty much lost the desire to shoot much more than practice so until that changes I will just go and play, burn up some shells ... I do not see me doing much if any registered shooting unless maybe I can go to a club that has PITA registered targets or that cross register ... The more I play with the chart, the more I can appreciate how it helps once I got past the idea of spot shooting which obviously is not or does not get to be problematic if one follows through with the shot ... I am more curious now than I have been in quite awhile to see if I can still shoot ... My neighbor likes my coming over to use his chart so he does also ... He has not been shooting very long and his scores continue to get better, went from the 70's, to the 80's, now constantly shooting 22's, 23's, 24's , no 25 yet but close ... Amazing how something as simple as that chart can actually work as well as it does if you use it ... I'm getting excited but Doctors come first for right now ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
My chart is going to a serious work out, after my back surgery--it will be months before I can handle recoil
Storeman, I wish that were true but twice I shot when I knew I was behind the target (a mistake I used to do on occasion) and once I flinched, shooting in open air with the stock not touching my cheek. Now I sure wish I'd forget that flinching stuff. I still get too excited on the firing line. I should calm down and take a little more time. The wall chart helped me with that when I started using it years ago. But since I don't shoot anymore, unless I force myself to go to the State Shoot, hoping that I'll also make it to the cashier window, my chart was last used 9 months ago, before that it had been 16 months, and before that over 2 years. I should have simply remembered my good habits! I think I had some. HB
Nice shooting HB, Congrats. Pulling the trigger when you KNOW you are not there yet or the flinch. Muscle memory tells you it's time to pull it but you know it's quite not right and your brain is screaming NOT YET The result is usually, LOST! And us standing there thinking, what the hell was that?
My wife bought a chart from Terry this past winter. I spent each day this past week doing 100-200 drills a day to get ready for the 100th Saskatchewan Provincial Trap Championships this past week in Swift Current. I only shot the two championship days events( 200 singles, 100 doubles and 100 caps), In saturdays singles I dropped a target in my second 25 but continued on to a 99 in the first half and ran the second half straight for a 199x200. It's been a long time since I posted 100 straight and it felt great. I feel like I am back in the game. I did not fare as well in the doubles and caps as I would have liked but at the conclusion of them and my third shoot since purchasing the chart I brought my average up from an all time low to within 1% of my average back before I started struggling due to health issues. It's been a long road to get back in the game but I think I am well on my way...Does the chart work? In my opinion it sure does!! Here are a few pics from the weekend. Some of you hockey fans from back in the day may recognize the guy seated on my right at a table in front of the clubhouse shooting the breeze with me.....
Nice shooting. Congrats! If anyone asks if you have been taking lesson tell them, Yep, sure have. Had an entire week of private lessons with Terry Jordan.
Not a HASBEEN any more ! Congrats to you, and glad you found that chart as useful as many of us have over the years. Terry sure does have a great training aid for those who use it.
Thank you! Most definitely! If you apply yourself and do your drills seriously it is a great training aid!
Hi Frank. Congratulations on a great score and breaking 100's again. I love the pictures and will try to get out there some year. The chart works great but the real magic is you taking the time to do 100 to 200 gun lifts a day. Whenever you get alone with your own mind working out with the gun it is a rehearsal for a future event the good results always show up. The chart is good eye aerobics, great for your shooting muscles and most important it gives you a strong head game. It works like self hypnosis and your mental plan to win a shoot gets strong. A calm mind gives you calm hands and a smooth the move to the target. If you work hard at home you can shoot easy. Thanks for a great report, results like this are more important to me than winning. Terry.
Runner up at the Edmonton Gun Club today in the 200 singles race of the Western Zone Shoot. I did three days in a row this week of 100+ drills on the chart. Shot 99 in the first half then 97 in the second. I have bumped my way back up from an all time low D class average to A class in the first 400 targets of the season and after today am still in A class but raised my average 1% to within 1/2 of a percent of AA....the chart and drills work! I started using blocker word this shoot and I feel it helped to clear my head. My downfall was shooting with my wife on the squad with me, she was posted to the next station to my left and three times I didn't use the blocker word to clear my head after she dropped a target and I found myself tryin g to figure out what was causing her issues....I finally got myself to take an extra second and use my blocker word to clear my head of the thoughts of her lost targets and get focused on my own targets and was able to run my last trap once again. Your drills have some great insight Terry. Thank you.
The good old chart works again ! Boy, I found that I could never shoot on the same squad as my wife, for your exact same reasons. Gonna have to start calling YOU "Bornagain" instead of Hasbeen.. LOL Good shooting ! Here was the little lady at her Dad's retirement place. She never left home without her chart.
I'll be going back to squadding separately next shoot. I prefer to watch her as a spectator. That way I can pick up on issues she may be having to help her out and keep my head in the game on my squad. Lol
In the last 500 singles I've posted 1-100, 3-99's and a 97....I'm doing 100 drills a day on the chart, it works!
I have a buddy in New York state who is a trap shooter and does skeet for fun in a league. Couple of years ago he started practicing doubles on the chart and the weekend came for his skeet league and he went out and broke 50 straight, which he would rarely get. He called and told me he thought by using the chart and practicing the upper targets for doubles, be gained a lot for his skeet game also. Nice shooting "Hasbeen NO MORE" !
One of the drills in Terry's manual is to do just that. Far left to far right back and forth 25 times without putting the gun down. I don't know that it's improved my skeet game so far as I haven't shot doubles on stations 3-4-5 since I gave up shooting registered skeet but I am sure it will not hurt my doubles any on stations 1-2 and 6-7. When it comes to skeet shooting I refer back to my Todd Bender instructional videos and follow his style of shooting. It simplified skeet for me and I shot much better when I applied his principles. I keep a spreadsheet on my laptop of all my shooting and I am running a 96+ average on the skeet field shooting an SX3 20ga using 7/8oz # target loads, the same gun I hunt with too. I am a one gun skeet and hunt guy. I use that gun for waterfowl, upland, skeet and the occasional 5-stand or sporting clays shoot.
Do not ever doubt that this works! I spent three days in front of the chart last week doing 100-150 drills per day and a few extras thrown in here and there between drill sessions and this past weekend August 6-8, 2021 attended the Canadian Trapshooting Championships at the Swift Current Trap Club in SK. Our Canadian Championships went through a bunch of changes due to covid from being completely cancelled for 2020 to being a phonetic satellite shoot being hosted by multiple clubs in various provinces across Canada much like the Zone shoots with scores being tabulated and the CTA delegates compiling scores by phone and computer to determine results and oversee shoot-offs across the country in differing time zones. It was the first time in all my years shooting that I shot a complete event, not just the Championship targets. At the end of the second event, the Rod Boll Handicap I was in a 4 way tie for 5th place(there were trophies to 5th) having shot 96x100 from 25 yards then taking the title in the first shoot-off round breaking 24x25 and earning a 1/2 yard punch to 25.5yds. That was my first trophy from a Canadian Championships event and my only of the weekend. Do I think the chart works? Absolutely! In fact so much so that it helped me to lead the squad I was with through the 2 doubles events. My doubles shooting experience is relatively new having shot a grand total of 2300 targets including the 200 from this past weekend. The chart enabled me to recognize where to hold my gun for the start of each post without having seen a few others shooters targets before leading off each post. It has been a game changer for me. I have moved up from D class to A in singles this season, am shooting a B class average in doubles and earned my first handicap punch since the 100th Grand in 1999! And looking at the CTA Scoreboard I ended up only 5 targets behind the Master himself in the HOA 700 with my score of 648x700 using the chart he designed!! Here are a few pics from Swift Current this past weekend. The shooting is only the second best part of the shoot when you shoot with the crew from SK. They know how to have fun and make the shoot a great social event. Saturday night we had what they call their annual Saskatchewan Soiree. Shooters and their families gathered after the shoot to celebrate the events and coming together again in the spirit of friendly competition with appetizers and beverages followed up with a pot luck supper with each shooter and their family bringing something to the table. It was nothing short of fantastic and after dinner a group of us gathered at a fellow shooters camper and sat around telling jokes, swapping stories of past shoots and other adventures. When it was dark my wife and I finally packed it in and headed back to our motel room to get some sleep for the final two events the following day. When the shooting was finished and the dust and smoke settled we packed the car with guns and gear, said our goodbyes, left a donation with the shoot cashier to give the trap help a tip and headed home. Though we still have one more shoot to attend this year on our agenda before packing it in for the season we are already looking forward to next years' Canadian Championships.
