Wanting to create a new load, looked at published data and Hornady powder bushing charts. Wanted to verify bushing and drop weight. Tried a few drops at 3rd station, removed to weigh powder, and continued with reload sequence. Not even close. Multi loads later, thought there must be a better way. Bright Bulb Idea went off! Removed all dies. Held a fired hull on powder drop rod, x10. Dropped powder to calibrated digital scale, divided total by 10. Adjusted bushing with strips of electrical tape, if needed. Repeat 10 drops, til spot on. Now I can drop a precise powder charge with little effort. Caution, use an accurate chronograph to check actual FPS vs published FPS.
Works equally well for shot drop weight. Just finished calibrating the Hornady shot bushings, 3/4 oz #9 through 9/8 oz #7.5. Each required Dremel alteration to add 5gr-8gr lead to drop marked weight, Star Magnum and Lawrence Magnum lead. Lesson learned. Just sayin’
I made my own powder measure cups from once fired hulls. Just remove the metal base and caulk the primer hole. Fits perfectly in the die without having to remove them for weighing.
You'll probably find the next batch of shot will weigh differently. Pellet diameter and antimony content will add to variations.
