Took my ole DeVault 391 to the range today. Had the machine set @ straight away Was shooting my B&P 1 oz loads @ 1160--used all my Muller chokes 2,3, & 4 Got good hits but could not smoke any targets from the 16 & 20 This was a gun test and choke test-the targets were white flyers
Temp? Seems like we get less smoke here in the winter. Wonder if temp plays a part in that. I’m in Michigan
My guess is 635G was at Robinson Ranch in Florida, with 70+° temps. I had most always seen Smoke with my hard hits, but lately I can smother a target with shot, and not see that cloud of smoke that used to float in the air. WFs also, did they change the formula any ?
Not seeing smoke from targets that last several years, some targets that just disappear sans smoke. Different target formulations, I suppose.
Of course targets are different. They changed formulas to accommodate automatic traps to reduce breakage. God I miss those old Remington targets thrown from hand traps many years ago.
Whatever happened to the Federal Classics, They were used at the Grand in Ohio at least one year as I can remember. They had shooters talking to themselves.
Temperature makes a big Difference -- Shot Wed night 17 Degrees -The only smoke we where getting is from 8 shot dusting the orange paint off the target and not broking the bird -- 7 1/2 shot and tighter choke here in Wisconsin is the answer for decent winter brakes -Still not dust
Temps, target composition, humidity I guess an play apart. I remember years ago when I first shooting targets as a younger guy and got into my own reloades. The old timers would tell me to shoot 8's in the summer and 7 1/2's in winter. I did this for awhile. I don't shoot or reload 8's for trap anymore. Found I get better targets breaks year round with 7 1/2's.
Maybe you were shooting the new white flyer “black out” targets in disguise, and you didn’t even know it. ???????
