Black “AA” Hulls

Guys quick question. Around what year or time span did Winchester make the BLACK “AA” Hull. An older guy at the club gave me some. And I’m not young myself. I’ve been reloading old style (cf) forever and have never seen a black version. They are cf, maybe they were euro market, brass base not steel, just curious. Thanks.

These are NOT the Browning shells you see laying around, wish I had a few boxes that corresponded to these shells. Would give us the answer or time frame. Was given them in a big ziploc bag.

 

Spanky, The blacks were in the middle to late 70's. The black dye was said to be the reason the hulls split often, so they were eliminated. They may be brittle, try a few to check them out. Roger C.

 

I can not say I was trap Shooting around that time. Hunting yes. They are pretty fresh. They were stored very well. I might run a few off to show them off at the club. I’ll most likely just hold on to them. I have enough reds and silver cf’s to last the rest of my lifetime.

Another guy years ago gave my around 100+ of these red (deeper crimson red) “AA’s” that we’re marked steel target. CF, brass base, 8 point also. You never heard about steel at that time. I cut one open and sized it up to a regular AA and it was spot on. Hulls have a slight rib to them. I just have them stashed away. Some day maybe I’ll find the exact box they came in and load them. I guess chances of that are slim.

 

Here is a black AA Handicap and the box in which it came. The guy who gave me this box of shells said he bought them at the spring Grand back in the 70`s...

Started in the summer of 1971 with a borrowed 1200 so I guess it would have been around 72 or 73 that one of my shooting/hunting buddies and I went to Guns Unlimited on the east side of Pittsburgh and each purchased a new
1400 Trap gun AND a full case of Black AA's. The price for the gun AND the shells was less than $200.00 I shot my 20 boxes up in about 3 weeks. Shot them for everything. Heck, I didn't know about "recoil", I just figured thats the way they were supposed to feel.

Flyersarebest, I bought a 1400 at Cleveland Winchester in 1972 for $100.00 out the door. Used it on the field and for skeet for about 5 years. sold it for $100,00. The black hulls would split when fired new. Win. said it was the black dye used in the hull. Roger C.

 

Yep, and the wood on those Trap or Skeet guns back then was nicer than all the plastic stocks and forearms they are pushing today.

I picked up my buddy or knocked out quite a few on the Annie line shooting those Black shells.

 

Yep, They were ASS KICKERS, but the plastic was to brittle, thus the splitting problem. I never seen one lodge in the barrel, I remember hearing them sheer off and go like a mortor over the trap house. Roger C.

 

Early 70's. Very tough hulls. I loaded them probably as many as 20 times. Have a once fired one i will shoot for my 50,000th 16 yd target at my 50th consecutive state shoot in 2022. Will then mount hull on a plaque. Have the last shell mounted for every milestone i have achieved over the years.

 

Have a bit of a box collection. Winchester, Remmie, Peters not real, real special compared to some but ok. That box I do not have with the handicap logo, will have to keep an eye out for it. Thanks for the pics. I’ll have to get some pics of my own up.

 

The ‘Black’ AA handicap shell used a special Winchester wad. The center ‘crush’ section had three solid posts separated by 120 degrees. This ‘crush’ section didn’t crush much hence the shot got out of the barrel faster. That’s the reason they ‘kicked’ harder than regular AA’s.

Back in the 1970’s you could buy the wads for reloading.

I freely admit that it did just that for me. But not in any vindictive mean spirited way. Personalities aside since I have no dog in that fight, I always appreciated the rational view and total lack of Hogwart's Physics.

They had Nickle Shot on the one's I have, used them in Shootoffs. Made in the early 70s

A friend of mine bought 20 Pallets of them w/ Nickle Shot I believe he has some left yet. I had some of the Black ones they gave away at the Grand. A weird true story, a guy told me had put them in his OVER/UNDER and said they were SNAP/CAPS I told him they were LIVE SHELLS, he almost shit his pants, took off to his car and removed them before someone got killed.

I find it fascinating that some persons are so conflict oriented that they even continue fighting with the unresponding dead! Not to mention what appears to be a hope of conjuring conflict out of nothing whatsoever!

Doc, We had a shooter at the spring grand in Phoenix who thought he put a snap cap in his gun and shot a hole thru the sun visor and roof of his van in the parking lot. sprayed a bunch of cars but no one hurt but the shooters van. Roger C.

 

All Snap Caps should have clear plastic ..... for upmost safety. Some Clubs do not allow them.

 

I have two old Herter's shells that have hard, transparent-blue hulls. For years I had them sitting on a shelf in my gun room, along side half a dozen snap caps, two of which also had hard, transparent-blue hulls. You can guess what happened.

No, I didn't pull the trigger on them, but I loaded the Herters, into my Citori, thinking they were snap caps, and pointed the gun down the hall. When I realized what I'd done, I about collapsed. What if my wife had walked into the hall at the same time I pulled the trigger on the "snap caps"? Gives me the willies even now, just thinking about it.
