Event #5 Handicap seemed to be a sucker bet as the 27 yd. shooters took 22/31 places of the top three scores. Anyone still doubt we need more yardage?

    Dawg, just askin'

Do you think there would have been that many if they opened the angles back up and threw a 50 yarder?

Not going to happen but I don't think the ata is going to be calling the cement trucks either.

Only one way to find out. Unfortunately, the wannabees will never let it happen.

Where is the rest of the story ????????

I don't give a damn how good someone thinks they are, it takes a lot of time, money, and effort to break a lot of "top scores from the 27" ..... not just the freak once in a life-time score that may happen .....

Where is the money coming from ????????? I can buy a ????? shotgun a hell-of-a-lot cheaper than chasing AA points for a free one ..... So the investment for return seems way off to those not privy to the behind the scenes story .....

FWIW ..... The mental midgets say the "best" will always win no matter what ..... But the "best" seem unwilling to chum the water to attract more fish .....

I'm excited to see all the Junior Shooters competing at such a high level. They're the Future of Trapshooting and being successful will keep you in this game until you're Broke or Dead.

My son Drew competed on four sub and junior ATA All-American teams back in the mid 60's. I know of only one shooter from that era who still competes-Dave Schaeffer. They all happen to be in their 40's. How long must we wait?

WOW, them juniors, sub juniors, (kids) are lighting the place on fire with some really good shooting ... Kind of wonder why they don't have the cameras up like that had that one year, could keep track of all of the action by flipping from one to the other ... 2020 classified so far so they might just have a banner year and increase the attendance past that banner 2003 they had ... Kind of wondering if those 30,000 regulars showed up in the camping and staying in the general area again ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Trapshooting needs to go back throwing targets like they did in the 90`s at the Missouri Fall Handicap...

ATA needs to go to Wobble machines throwing 70-yard targets for everything and 1 once loads. Like, get in touch with the rest of the world.

I wonder how much money it would take to replace every machine at that place the ata calls the "grand" AND
EVERY MACHINE IN EVERY CLUB that wants to throw "registered" targets.

I'm sure you'll enjoy receiving the bill for converting or replacing all the existing machines with wobble units. Besides, existing trap houses are not really adaptable to wobble either. Most of the rest of the world doesn't even own a shotgun. I want some of what you're smokin'!

Wobble isn't the answer, we have one, if we fire it up few if any of the registered shooters will shoot. Perfection is what they want, perfect scores not hard targets.

I can attest that at my old club in NY State one of the finest shooters out of NY would take the machine and set it on Wobble and shoot practice rounds from it.

I asked him one time why he liked doing this.

His reply was he couldn't rely on the wind and weather to be perfect during shoots and shoot offs.

This was his great practice for just those occasions.

How about working hard to get your fundamentals down perfectly, working hard on your mental plan and shoot lots of targets and spend lots of money to be good like the 27 yard shooters. Get competitive and beat their asses. I would rather compete with them on a level playing field and lose than handicapping them and win. They work hard, spend lots of money shooting targets and give the rest of us someone to beat that would mean something. Quit your whining and work hard at getting better is my motto. No offense meant - just my opinion.

So you suggest everyone shoot from the 27 since it's no longer much of a handicap for some shooters or add a few yards of concrete to those who've pretty much mastered the current fence. Which, in your mind is the better solution?

Get rid of the concrete, everybody shoot the 27 in classes. You only compete in your class. Just a thought. I don't see anybody pouring concrete, some clubs couldn't afford the expense. I agree there is a problem.

Well at the Grand there probably should be some more yardage. Plenty of room behind the traps at Sparta. I'm not even talking about pouring more concrete. Just get a yard square of rubber mat and lay it behind the 27 yard line. If you think that is too expensive go by a construction site and borrow some mortar boards for the shoot and lay them out. LOL

This extra yardage for now would only apply at the Grand. I'm just guessing but you wouldn't even have to add the extra mats to what - a couple of banks? Or if you squadded all 27 yarders together - when a guy gets punched you could hand him his own square yard of mat and tell him he can take it with him to the next days handicap and lay it out and shoot on that. Move it post to post. LOL

Look I know it sounds silly but think about it for just a while. A 27 yarder now can get punched the first day of the Grand and still shoot all week from the same yardage. If we add - 2 yards at the Grand to make the 29 the back fence, it might add some interest now lacking. I'm sure every 27yarder out there now would love to be the first person to get punched to the 29 yard line. We could have a race to the 29. And I'm sure every shell company, gun company would want to have somebody using their products be the first to the 29.

The 29 yard line isn't going to save trapshooting but it could add some interest. Put the 29yard line banks in front of vendor row. This would be a place of honor to shoot. New shooters, average shooters would know where to go to watch the big dogs shoot and might go to those traps to see if anybody has made it to the 29 or if they are still stuck on the 28.

I could see vendors, manufacturers putting their name on the "yard" of rubber mat. Could you see a Winchester labeled mat - with the Winchester logo on it. If you get to the 28, you get to take your own mat home with you? How about Remington? White Flyer, Berretta logo mats - you can only get one by shooting your way to the back while using their products?

The game needs to try a little something different. Maybe some former 27 yarder who hasn't shot in years gets back into the game because he wants to go down in history as the first to the 29?

After the Grand those shooters go back to shooting from the 27.

I know it sounds stupid but tell me why that wouldn't/couldn't/shouldn't happen. If not the 29 yard line at the Grand Only what can we do to add some interest to the game? I'm not trying to punish 27 yarders - just trying to bring a little attention to our sport.

Thinking outside the box? We need more of this. Sure better than watching 80 yo and 20 yd. handicapped shooters flailing away at 27 yd. targets.

What's the difference if it only happens at the Grand? If they go back to the usual yardage the rest of the year. Soft targets at the Grand make for good scores, that's why so many good scores are broke there. If additional yardage is the answer, I'm not against it, it has to happen where competitive targets are thrown also. Everybody talks about sandbagging, what's the sense in it, No Money in it anymore. Throw competitive targets at 27 yards in classes for awhile and get some numbers to work from, if that doesn't work add yardage.
If you think 29 yards on a rubber mat 2 weeks a year on narrow targets is the answer I think your mistaken!

Oleolliedawg, after going over and looking at some of the handicap scores being shot at the Grand by Juniors and Sub Juniors - I don't know if my post had any thinking in it - either inside or outside the box. LOL Having some 10 year old kid be the first to get punched to the 29 would probably do more harm than good. Can you imagine telling somebody you are a trapshooter and the targets are challenging - and they come back and say - "how hard can it be if a 10 year old kid got to the 29 on the first day of your "Grand" shoot?" LOL

    I dunno.....the 4 99s at the GAH were 24.5 down to 20.5 out of 2002 shooters.

Preli handicap the 2 99s were 21 yarders out of 2011 shooters.

The 27 yarders shot up the 98s and 97s though.

I will say this about the sport......you have to run 100 at each discipline to win.
