Do you shoot on your own land?

I got a piece of land that is 1/4 mile deep. I've shot hand thrown targets on the land before, but not many. Been thinking about getting an automatic trap so I could just go out and shoot when I want, or set up a small sporting clays course in the woods.

Then I get to thinking - do I really want to do that? I'm old and don't know how much longer I'll be shooting and I always figured I could sell the land to pay for nursing home if that time comes. Don't want somebody to claim the land is contaminated with lead and say I gotta give it away.

I guess I could only shoot steel.

It's hypocritical on my part to have no problem shooting lead on gun club property but when it comes to my own. LOL

Anybody else got a range on their property?

 

Yes, I shoot on my own property, pistols, rifles, portable trap, deer hunting, small game, but lately shot pattern board.

 

I have considered it many times.

 

I shot rifle pistol and shot gun on my property -- I feel their is no problem as long as it is still zoned farmland -- if the zoning would change I would have to rethink my options.

 

Yup, we have a nice rifle range on it, been thinking about a trap field as well, but then i'd never leave lmao

 

Too many variables for you to worry about.

1) You may never make it to a nursing home.
2) The amount of lead you are throwing may not even be detectable.
3) If you have enough land to shoot on it may be just as valuable to another gun owner.
4) Owning land you can't enjoy, might as well sell it now, and buy (more) scrub ground some where else.

I shoot (and have for over 50 years) on my farm, and have a Sporting Clays course. There is no fear of it never selling.

 

If you shoot much on your land, say have a trap range and shoot regularly with pals, you WILL have a lead problem when you sell.
Sorry to say it. But you will.

 

We shot a lot on our ranch, thousands a day of 22 rimfire all types of center fire at the alfalfa eating Bengal squirrels. When ground come up for sale it sells in no time for big money. This may not be trap shoting or skeet shoot the lead is stil there.

 

And you know this, How?

 

Be careful about setting up a sporting clays course. If you ever want to sell the land the EPA may insist on a clean up program. At least do not make it a public club. Roger C.

You don't happen to shoot any pheasants or the occasional duck on the property do you?
I am more than a bit jealous.

 

I don't have any pheasants roaming the property but in the fall I get some ducks and geese that stop by. These days I only deer hunt and pop a wandering yote if they happen by.

 

Looks like pheasant country by the picture. Might want to release a few in the spring and see what happens.

Forgot to say we have a ton of turkeys around. I don't hunt them but I let some friends come and hunt on turkeys. The farm is busy with family for deer hunting week in November.
