I've noticed in my time shooting trap most of the winners tend to uh.... larger individuals. My current gun is patterning to low for my liking (currently shooting about 78/22). I want to get my gun to pattern 90/10 like most top shooters suggest. A guy at my club told me I should install an adjustable comb so I looked online at pricing, way to expensive!! So, if i just gain a bunch of weight in my face could I save myself the expense of an adjustable comb? I can buy a lot of junk food for the price of an adjustable comb. My doctor might not agree but I don't care, I don't think he even shoots registered birds. So, do I gain weight or empty my wallet? Opinions wanted, Thanks.
Take it from a 51 year old Diabetic, spend the $200-300 for the adj comb!! There's several that do reputable work and reasonable turnover time. I'd start with Keith Heeg or Rod's Custom. Have used both and great guy's to deal with!!
Ah go for the fat, lol no really try and get a really beatup cheap replacement stock and go to work with bondo and a file, get it perfect then have it duplicated, or painted nice...if your gun has +++ grade wood its not a good thing to cut it up imho, ive passed on quite a few SCO or better guns do to the cut stock.
Beretta sells a 1/8 inch and a 1/4 inch rubbery stick on pad you can take on and off -- .$25 $30 ?---worked great for a cheap try.
Go for the adjustable comb. Because after you get fat you won't like it and you get slim again. You could try " The Stock Shop "
If you have a band saw and a few hand tools, do it yourself. When adjustable combs first began showing up that's what I did, on maybe 4-6 guns. As a matter of fact a friend still shoots my wife's old BT-99 that I cut and made the adjustable comb for. It still works. It's not rocket science. Save your heart, and money!
Mr. Pump Gun: The difference between 78/22 and 90/10 is just slightly over 3” at 40 yards. I guess the question is do you believe that slightly more than 3”” is causing targets to slip through your 30” pattern. Is there some other factor or combination of factors which may be responsible for what the scorekeeper has to say? Hmmm.... Gaining weight in the face will certainly alter your point of impact. However, any potential benefit as to elevation is likely to be negated by a change in windage.
Already more bites than I expected. Wonder how many more this little cast will get? After all, this is important stuff.
Brad, I will take 1-1/4 0z. of 7 1/2's over 1 oz of eight's any day. those lip hooks really work . Roger C.
Roger maybe at this stage of the game you should go the 1oz trip they aren't as heavy to carry around? LOL Dave Berlet
By the looks of the average ATA shooter as a group they are too cheap to go the adjustable stock route. Roger if I had my druthers I'd go with 1 and 3/8 oz of nickle 6's every time if there is money on the line.Brad
Nonregistered winter shoot: I tried 3.25 1.25 copper 7.5's one time from the 27. They made too much noise and the squad was asking "what are you shooting"? Only shot one trap with them.
It all depends. If you are a right handed shooter and your wife or girlfriend is left handed. Tell her you are going to shoot thousands, around 10 thousand or so, of registered targets in every state you can think of then spend a couple of weeks at that place in IL. in August. Tell her it is going to cost thousands and thousands of dollars and you will not get much back, if anything, in winnings. Tell her it's all about being with friends, not the money. When she hits you in the right side of your face it will swell enough that you can determine if getting fat is going to work. If she is a righty then stand with your back to her when you tell her. If you are a lefty just reverse the directions. Good Luck!,
I went that route and now I lost 120 lbs. about 15 yrs. ago. Have now worked my way up to the 23.5 yrd line. Roger C.
